I thought Logan bread is what the elves in Lord of the Rings gave Frodo to eat? A good recipe would be appreciated. And what's the difference between that and hard tack?
What does it taste like?

Can't help with a recipe. My memory challenged brain recalls that Logan bread was originally carried on an early expedition to Mount Logan. Possibly the first successful summit expedition on one the World's most remote and toughest climbs.
I will try my hand at making a batch.

1/2 c. unbleached flour
1/2 c. soy flour
1/4 c. wheat germ
4 c. whole wheat flour
1 c. honey
3 tbsp. molasses
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 to 3/4 c. dry milk
1/4 c. vegetable oil
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
2 to 4 c. dried fruits and nuts (dates, prunes, apricots, fruit cake mix, sunflower nuts, almonds, walnuts, peanuts)
Dump all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Mix with hand. Add water until it holds together well. Pat out on cookie sheet to 1/2 inch thickness. Score into squares. Bake 1/2 to 1 hour (or less) at 300 degrees. Don't overcook. Should not be brown or it gets hard. Freezes well.

Our scout troop used to make up a batch for winter camping. If packaged correctly it can be frozen for a long time. The description as similar to fruitcake is somewhat descriptive.

We eat it all the time. Like a very dense (and non-alcoholic) fruitcake. Very filling and tasty if you like dried fruit.
