So we're hiking from Erwin down to Newfound Gap over Thanksgiving week and would like to time it such that we spend a nero on Thanksgiving in the town of Hot Springs. We'd arrive Wednesday evening and stay in town to have an early dinner then hike out Thursday afternoon. We have 2 adults, 3 kids and 1 dog. My preference would be for a location with heat (as opposed to tenting) and a tv or common room with a tv for the kids (I know, I know, we're hiking but it's Thanksgiving). Of course, they have to take pets. I've scoured AWOLs guide and I'm sifting through TripAdvisor and the local chamber of commerce.

Anyone have suggestions or great experiences to share (especially those with dogs)?

You may want to reconsider the dog, since they're not allowed I the GSMNP. Otherwise, sounds like a nice way to spend the holiday! I can't recommend anyplace to stay in HS, as I've only passed thru and not spent a night there. Enjoy!

Why not do Erwin to Hot Springs instead and save the hassle of having to going back for the dog? I imagine you'd be leaving it at Standing Bear?

It looks like the Hot Springs Resort Cabins would be your best bet. They have a $10 pet fee and $45 cabin which sleeps 5. If thier open this time of year.

Great place to stay! I've stayed there 2x and they do allow pets, too.

Forgot to add--Springbrook Cottages also have hiker rates(cheaper). Be sure to tell them you are hiking!

Thanks, Slo. I looked at the resort cabins and they looked doable though not quite what we were looking for. Still, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush :) And yes, we'll be staying at Standing Bear.

What about Laughing Heart? The hostel is right next to the cabin--a breezeway connects the two buildings. The hostel has a bunk room, but also has several other private rooms with two or three beds. You could put 2 in one room, three in the other. Or, the cabin should fit you all. When I stayed in the bunk room last month there was another guy staying there with his two small dogs, so they must accept pets. I think he stayed in one of the private rooms in the hostel. Call and talk to Chuck Norris or Tigger for details.

Definitely check into this place... Hikers have told me really good things about this place in Hot Springs.

I read your #7 post, FC. I would "copy and paste" info that I have recently read about Standing Bear Farm but this thread isn't about Standing Bear. Good or bad reviews... threads are being closed on this place. People are free to talk on other hiking pages.. they are sharing.
