View Full Version : Thru Hike - North Face Thermoball Insulated Jacket?
Plan to Thru hike, buying gear slowly. Has anybody had any experience with the Thermoball Insulated Jacket on a thru hike? If not, what does anybody suggest as cold weather outer layers? Thanks!

I see where the thermoball hoodie is = to 600 down fill power and weighs 14oz, not very impressive. I would look at this> Montbell UL down parka at 9 oz (http://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?p_id=2301156). I have the MB UL vest at 5 oz.
Chair - Man,
Would you recommend a hood for a thru hike? I would love that extra warmth around my head, but am worried about it being a problem while wearing a pack If I decide to not wear the hood for a day? It doesn't get in the way or anything? Thanks for the quick reply!

The reason why the thermoball was intriguing was because of it's water repelling capabilities. I do enjoy that Mont Bell you posted, but worried about getting it wet...
Watch cap for your head. I use a couple in varying materials and weights for versatility, like fleece & wool. Perfect for keeping me warm in my sleeping bag also.
Disclaimer: I'm not a fan of hoods due to lack of versatility. Unless it is really really sub-zero cold.

I have the MontBell parka referenced and highly recommend it. I like having a hood.
