ATC will host “Wild Virginia!,” a live demonstration by the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center (http://www.blueridgewildlife.org) of animals you might see along the Appalachian Trail. The program will take place on Saturday, November 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the ATC’s visitor center at 799 Washington Street, Harpers Ferry, WV. This event is free and is open to the public.

This program focuses on animals that live in Virginia and interesting facts and stories about them. Many of these species are found all along the 14 states that the Appalachian Trail passes through from Georgia to Maine. Marian Orlousky, ATC's Northern Resource Management Coordinator, will begin the program with a brief presentation on the types of wildlife that can be found along the A.T. and some environmental research efforts that have been taking place. Then children will have a chance to interact with animals that inhabit the A.T. corridor: these might include a fox, snake, turtle, raptor, possum, and more.

Space is limited; pre-registration is required. To reserve space, RSVP to [email protected] by Thursday, November 7. Children must be accompanied by an adult supervisor.

H. Dean Clark, trail name "Crooked Sticks," will be here volunteering to photograph the event. Many of you have met him at The Gathering--he's the energetic, friendly, high-spirited guy who has taken the group photo at the last three Gatherings.

We've been told one of the animals coming is a screech owl. Here's his (or her) picture from The Blue Ridge Wildlife Center, which rehabilitates native animals. Barred owls and great horned owls are heard a lot more frequently.

Who's heard a screech owl on the A.T.?

Sounds like a neat program, Laurie. If I wasn't out of town this weekend, I'd definitely attend.

Thank you Laurie for the heads up. This is yet ANOTHER way in which the ATC works to protect the AT corridor and offers programs that enhances the relationship the environment and the hiking community share.
