Anyone have a good recipe? I've been looking all over google but I'd rather ask hikers what their favorite trail recipe is.

Start with powdered whole milk. Add cocoa powder, sugar, a bit of cinnamon, and a bit of instant coffee. Proportions to your taste.

Besides Swiss Miss?

I fondly remember Swiss miss from back when I was a kid...

Sadly, I don't think their current recipe actually qualifies as hot chocolate.

Swiss MissŪ Milk Chocolate Flavor Hot Cocoa Mix
Ingredients: sugar, corn syrup, modified whey, cocoa (processed with alkali), hydrogenated cocnut oil, nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, less than 2% of: salt, dipotassium phosphate, mono- and diglyderides, artificial flavor. Contains milk.

That sounds more like what grandma used to make!

A handful of M&Ms and a swig of warm water.

At some point I will make hot chocolate using Nido, Maltodextrin and cocoa. That would allow a high calorie tasty brew. Throw in some coffee and you have trail mocha.

Hot chocolate - Feral Bill's recipe sounds good, but replace the instant coffee with brewed. Float a marshmallow on top, stir with a peppermint stick. Rum or peppermint schnapps optional.

Any instant name brand.

Buy the large canister.

Mix 2 spoons (+/-) instant coffee with 3 -4 (+/-) teaspoons hot chocolate mix into an empty 8 oz. marshmallow fluff jar. Fill jar up with those proportions or whatever you like.

Mix 3-4 spoons of mix with a mug of hot water.

I have always thought that the best hot chocolate was made from Hershey's cocoa powder, and if I were looking for a recipe I would use this...

A packet and a half instead of one. Add hot water and stir. I often drink it at breakfast to sneak a few extra calories in.

If making it from scratch, try using powdered sugar instead of regular sugar.

And definitely check out the Trader Joe's variety of hot cocoa mix.

I see the chemistry experiments that often pass as Hot Chocolate in the U.S. aren't going unnoticed by everyone as chemistry experiment concoctions.

German GF in college pointed this out to me one Valentines's Day when I bought her a large Hershey's KISS. She pointed out that what I was giving her was basically chocolate flavored sugar and who know's what else. We still had a great Valentines Day though. :D Later that yr, at Christmas her relatives back home in Germany and Switzerland sent us some high quality chocolate(and Hot Chocolate) from Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. No comparison. Most U.S citizens are clueless when it comes to what they are OFTEN eating when the label says hot chocolate or chocolate.

I mix real plain cocoa powder(which is quite bitter,) with some powdered cane sugar(agave syrup also can work), real vanilla, dash of fine sea salt, tiniest dash of nutmeg, some powdered milk and a dab of real whipped cream and small sprinkle of cinnamon on top. Shot of coffee and Sambuca, Frangelica, or peppermint Schnapps on special occasions and it completes the snowshoeing, skiing, and boarding day.

Different cocoa powders have different tastes. Try high quality UNSWEETENED Mexican and Guatemalan cocoa powders as different bases and don't be afraid to twist it up by trying with a bit of cayenne pepper as the people do where cocoa trees are grown.
