odd to me 1000 watts? call me stupid I honestly can do this for each and every shelter that hasn't a over cover of leaves - for $2000 with deep cycle. So clearly I have a huge issue with the article and the supplier. I don't even have to look this up. I don't have overhead; I am an owl.

Given the money I can produce this!

The cost cited included moving the shelter also

part of those monies were for shelter relocation.

To be more clear.

This is a shelter in the city of Waynesboro, for the use of AT hikers.

This is not a shelter on the AT.

Per the article that Hiker Mom supplied - "Actually running power from a power line out into the middle of this field would've been really costly for the city. So instead we relied on donations to raise money for this project and it's a more cost-effective way of putting in a little bit of power to keep them connected,” said Jeff Nicholson, sales consultant with Sigora Solar.

They raised $1,200 for the new panel and installation. The support came from the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association and other private donors.

Private donations and other ways to monetize the technology will eventually help drive costs down, imho.
