Hiking the AT, trying to figure out layering camp clothes. Cold or wet weather, you set up your tent, and change into some dry Merino baselayer. How do you layer your bottom half? A spare pair of running shorts to protect your butt/ modesty? Wind or rain pants? Thanks!

I wear some underarmor cold gear tights for lower half warmth. I would imagine merino wool is probably lighter, but I have been happy with my choice. I have not camped in the 30's or below though, so hopefully someone who has been in very cold temps can also weigh in.

Unless I'm soaked through from an all day rain or if it's real cold and my top is damp from sweat, I leave on what I got on until it's time to go to bed, then I'll put on my pj's as it were. That gives my body heat time to dry out my clothes, either to some degree or all together depending on how wet/damp they got during the day.

So really, it all depends on the current conditions.

I wore convertible pants hiking. Kept them on until bedtime. Had a dry set of light shorts for sleeping. Put on the cold, wet pants again in the morning.

Interesting. Thanks for the replies.
My limited wet/cold hiking experience was that as soon as I stopped for the day, I would be chilled by the time I got my tent set up and dinner prepared. My 60 year old body gets cold pretty fast, so changing early was always nice, but a pain to keep the sleep set dry...

In the summer, just the spare pair of hiking shorts. That way I can rinse out my stinky shorts and let them maybe dry overnight, and I have something clean for hitching and town.

In cooler weather, a pair of 150-wt merino wool long john bottoms under the shorts. For more warmth, add rain pants, which are often the only long pants I bring on a hike.

In winter, I'll probably be hiking in the long johns, so I have a pair of Powerstretch tights for camp and sleeping. Again, add rain pants as needed.

Rain pants over long johns sounds like a warm alternative. Might leave the shorts at home until it warms up.
