Most of the hikers we have met seem to have good reception with Verizon phones, not so much with AT&T or the others. Battery life can be a problem but if you use it wisely you should be able to make it last until you can get to a charging point. Be sure you take along both car and house chargers. We have also found that some hikers are carrying the KINDLE for reading pleasure as well as internet connectivity when near WIFI.

Saw no thru hikers responded so I will try and help as a section hiker. Pack and use the light wt tents as much as u can I have a 4lb 2 person tent and it works great as it is easy and quick to setup. Some nights, shelters are doable and you will even sleep on the ground around the campfires with a sleeping bag.

Pack light...eat and drink properly. But the most important thing...ENJOY!

I had my EVO (Android) with me during a weekend hike. It was very useful. Unfortunately, it died on the second day. I'm now planning on getting one of those small solar panels that can be hooked to the back of your pack. I used the GPS more than anything.

I am planning to bring my droid phone for the above reasons next year but I don't anticipate good reception unless I am near a town. You could try a satellite phone but the cost is quite high.
