  1. 26 May 2010

    26 May 2010, Pearisburg
I went to the post office this morning to mail home a few things. I had breakfast along the way. After I got things mailed, I went to the library to use the internet. I wanted to check out REI for the same day pack that Hopper has been using. I have used it a couple of times when Hopper stayed behind in her room while I slack packed. I really like that pack for slack packing. It folds up into its own pocket and weighs almost nothing. After I found it on the web ...

  2. 25 May 2010

    25 may 2010, Sugar Run/VA 663
Started around 9:30 at the road crossing for Woods Hole Hostel today and headed south to VA 606 doing a slack pack.

We stopped for lunch at a rock outcrop on Sugar Run Mountain.

Ben took off after a deer today. He bolted through the woods. I yelled at him and he did not even pause. He disappeared out of site. We could hear him running through the woods way off in the distance until we could not hear him any longer. I was ...

  3. Day Two - Monday

Left Black Mtn Shelter for Springer Mtn. We were slow because of the drizzle and wet ground. The path toward the Springer Mtn wass challenging but not like the Approach Trail at Amicalola Falls. The path upward was not strenuous but quite challenging.

As we arrived at the Springer Mtn peak, we saw the plaque saying the name of the Mtn and touched it. Made some pictures of us touching the plaque. Then we wrote our stories in the journal that was in the box inside the boulder. I thought ...

    24 May 2010, Bland
I was originally going to hike from Sugar Run Gap/VA 663 to VA 606 but when the church group pulled into the motel parking lot and offered to take all the hikers to breakfast at the church, we could not turn it down. They served up a good meal. When got back from breakfast it was 10:30 and it was too late to do the hike we wanted to do. We picked up Professor at Laurel Creek/VA. 615 on the way to breakfast this morning and he came back to the motel to get a room. He ...

  5. Day two - Monday, part two

As we trekked on the path toward Hawk Mtn Shelter, I trekked little further from my team and we agreed to go to Hawk Shelter if we went solo. I went solo for at least 4 miles. It was an extraordinary experience being so alone in the isolated spot with a glimpse of civilization. Saw a few fields of may apple, ferns and trilliums. It was so picturesque and I would not trade for anything for that solo moment. No black bears and snakes in sight. Stopped by the water. I washed my smelly and soaked dirty ...
