Be aware of scammers praying on families of hikers completing the trail

I just received an email from a family that just got hit with a scam that I wanted to make everyone aware of. Here is a portion of the email.

I am the father of a thru hiker that just completed the AT this month. Our family just got hit by a scam we believe involves AT hikers that anyone on the trail or planning to be on the trail should be aware of. There is a scam ring on social media watching those who complete the trail, and, if they can determine who their elderly relatives are (also through social media), they attempt to pull off the 'Grandma Scam'. They contact the grandparents posing as the hiker saying they've been in an accident, need money, not to tell their parents - and elderly grandparents fall for it, and send money to the scammers using numbers from untraceable Target or similar gift or bank cards - typically around $2,000-$4,000 worth. It is a masterful scam- they know their families and know their grand kid just completed the trail and are on the way back home etc. The scammers string of phone numbers are landlines from NY State. We think all hikers (current and future) should alert their families of this scam.

Lambert's Meadow Shelter and Campground closed due to Problem Bear activity
(5/11/16) Due to problem bear activity around Lamberts Meadow Shelter and Campsite, including a bear coming into the shelter and taking hikers' food bags, Lambert's Meadow Shelter and Campground are closed. If necessary, hikers may use a temporary designated campsite that has been established just south of Hay Rock, and marked with a sign. No fires! Hay Rock is 5.4 miles north of Lamberts Meadow Shelter, and 4 miles south of US-220 in Daleville. Lamberts Meadow is the only reliable water source between Campbell Shelter and Tinker Creek near Daleville. Hikers camping near Hay Rock should bring sufficient water.

Lost AT hiker Largay died of exposure and lack of food, water

AUGUSTA — The Maine Warden Service has confirmed that remains found in the woods on Oct. 14 are those of lost Appalachian Trail hiker Geraldine Largay.

The chief medical examiner determined she died an accidental death because of lack of food and water and environmental exposure, according to a news release issued Friday afternoon.

Largay's remains were found in Redington Township by a contractor doing a forest survey on property owned by the U.S. Navy. The 66-year-old from Tennessee had been missing since late July 2013 and extensive searches had turned up no sign of her.

Cpl. John MacDonald said the Maine State Police Computer Crime Lab examined the cellphone found with Largay's remains and found she had "reached Orbeton Stream and the discontinued railroad bed crossing in the late morning of July 22, 2013. Shortly after reaching that intersection, she continued north on the Appalachian Trail and at some point left the trail and became lost. The exact location where she departed the trail is unknown."

A.T. hikers will certainly miss the hospitality extended over the years by Gary and Sandy Poteat at the Blueberry Patch Hiker Hostel (Dick's Creek Gap, Hiawassee, Ga.). The hostel has been closed and will not reopen. On behalf of myself and all those who've had their thru-hikes enriched by the kindness and generosity of the Poteat, thank you and God Bless. Your warm welcomes and hearty pancake breakfasts made us feel as if we were among family.

Because it is a possibility, is why The CDC is recommending that people keep wearing masks, and practice social distancing after being vaccinated.
