Planning to hike half of the AT in the Shenandoah National Park section (starting at Rockfish gap and heading north). In another forum someone mentioned that even reliable sources were scarce (this info was passed on to me - I did not read it myself), but according to the nps.gov site the water sources listed sound viable enough.
Should we cache water or is that not needed in this section? The most recent post here regarding this same topic was a month ago. Has anyone recently hiked it?

Just finished. There is a spring at Black Rock gap hut. It is a slow spring, but plenty of water. And you would only have to carry enough to get you to Loft Mtn campground.Quote:

Pretty much from calf Mtn to Black Rock gap hut is dry (NOBO).
It's been very dry for them in the area. Hth.

As said above....south is very very very dry. Calf mountain spring was one of better sources in area and was a trickle for most part. Luckily it's cooler now but I was told no rain month. Drier than when I was there in August....and I thought that was dry.
