I don't carry bear spray in the Apps. I used to carry a whistle when I ran to scare off the bears. The one time I thought about using it, I just could not bring myself to blow it. I thought it might...
The Mellodrome is at Carrier Park on Amboy Road.

Sly,
Please remind me of who to call about lodging at base camp. Thanks.

I believe most are open. Did you have a particular one in mind? You might also check the NC National Forest website:www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/

I used several methods on my hikes including: Start out with a good stash of tea bags (it doesn't weigh that much), send some in mail drops, buy it in town (again, even a box of good bags doesn't...
Yellowstone is gorgeous and quite varied. I've done several short trips in the park. You have to get a back country permit for campsites and trails will be closed if bears have been active. We did...
I've noticed that disappearing hair thing too. Haven't shaved pits or legs since my wedding day over 20 years ago. I have practically no underarm hair and not too much on my legs. Isn't that sweet?

Look like some kind of fancy arm warmers to me. I use them biking. I thought about taking them backpacking instead of a long sleeved shirt. But I did not.

Did a late spring trip between Palmerton and Dalton and a late summer trip from Kinsman's Notch south to Dalton. Now I'm finished with the AT! On to the next adventure!

I have found that if I position my fleece vest so that it covers my hips and stomach and then zip it up that my hips and butt stay much warmer. Of course my nightly hot flashes help out too!

I don't think there are any shelters up high. There are spots to camp though. When hiking through Montreat I would recommend picking up the East Ridge Trail off of the Toll Road. It's a gorgeous...
One of my rules of safe solo hiking has been to not hitchhike alone. However , I have done it a few times. Once was from Palmertown to a bus stop in Slatington when I was sick and heading home and...
I have had great experiences at both the Outfitter and the hostel. I don't know all the details of the people involved but have made the followiing assumptions reading this thread:
Wally is a person...
I did a yoga/stretching routine most days. I usually got into camp sometime between 3-5 and made that one of my first activities. If you make it a priority and part of your routine you can do it. I...
I think I walked in on that party last year. It was sweet!

I just had to make an emergency exit from the trail. I flew from Albany, NY to Asheville. I left my fuel canister in the hiker box at the Shamrock Hotel in Dalton, stuffed everything else in my...
I hear you Roland. I plan to savor those last miles!

Ah, I wish it was that simple. Life in my family is quite interesting. As my father used to say "It will all work out".
I now have 230 miles of the AT left to hike and hope to finish that this...
I'm found, home, and taking care of business.

Acutually she would have been in Great Barrington, MA May 24 not the 17 like I first mentioned. Thanks, JW.
I'm trying to get in touch with Julie White. She's on a section hike from PA to NH. She was in Great Barrington, MA this past Thursday (5/17/07) traveling north. If anyone see's her, ask her to call...
I agree with Dances with Mice. Cafe Bustelo is the best instant coffee that I have tried.

Mindi,
I would not worry too much about the itinerary. I've found them to be rather "loose" things when dealing with Greyhound. I took a bus last summer from PA to Asheville, NC. While my ticket...
I know that you can access the AT from Wolf Laurel because when doing trail maintenance on that section a few years ago we drove through Wolf Laurel to access the trail on Big Bald. I don't remember...
