As does Mountain Laurel Designs.
Thanks for the responses! My girlfriend might take up less space than a pair of dogs, so I'm still hopeful. And both of us are are a tad smaller than Andy and Andy's wife, so I'm anxious to hear how...
I recently discovered a product called Moon Cheese for those latter days -- basically straight dehydrated cheese (tastes sort of like a baked cheeto). All different kinds.
Anyone use this tent with 2 people? In particular, I'm considering the SS Li for a cuddly couple, one thick guy and one petite girl. The sleeping space seems just large enough on paper, which I think...
Just a reminder for those concerned about cleaning pots with minimal water availability -- sand and dirt do an outstanding job of easily cleaning just about anything from a cookpot.
I use an HMG pod for food storage. It's got a loop from which it can depend for hanging. The zipper isn't necessarily guaranteed to be 100% waterproof, but I haven't had mine leak yet in the rain,...
The cubes from HMG aren't very transparent. I find the main advantage of a cube is the zipper, which allows me to open it flat and find anything in there easily. It also allows the cube contents to...
It all depends on the "homeless" person. I lived out of my backpack for a decade. Actually homeless, no complaints, just like camping. Being broke and needing to beg is a separate matter entirely,...
I've spent weeks at a time in the Winds without seeing a single tree or bush. Treeline is pretty low there (for the Rockies, anyhow). If you plan on being above about 8000', I agree that a hammock is...
I never hike without my phone! Nor do I ever use it on the trail (not once, in several dozen trips so far). I am 6oz heavier now though, so I've got that going for me.
Always cook in the pot for me, as I'm not into ingesting chemicals leeched from hot plastic. My Ti pot never retains taste after cleaning with just water or sand. Interestingly, I've found that the...
I've camped on the beaches of the Northwest lots of times, and have always regretted it. Yes, sand gets in everything, regardless of how sealed up tight your tent is. I found condensation to be a...
Phones can be dropped into ravines just as much as maps can blow away, that much is the same. Phones, being electronic, have an additional points of failure that maps don't have.
Funny, people talk all the time about how phone apps are so much "better" than paper maps, but for the life of my I can't figure out why they think so. The phone window is too tiny to provide any...
A nice video breakdown of the Aeon Li, including a point-by-point comparison to the Plexamid.
Can you make a good pyramid with a cat-cut tarp? I never tried. A rectangular tarp always seemed more versatile to me. Perhaps in particular because I generally only carry one pole, and the cat-cut...
I wonder what REI dividends go for on the Black Market!
(Seriously though ... a Parks Pass? I had no idea, that's awesome.)
Update: I've used the Nemo Switchback half a dozen nights now, ranging from sub 20° frozen ground to soft grass to concrete topped with a 1/8" of hard rubber. At this point I think it's safe to say...
:D
Now Slo' has a good point about the Canadian Rockies. I haven't experienced bad bugs at *night* in the Rockies, but I've definitely been far enough north that "night" never really fully...
Ha, no worries, yeah just sharing my experiences. Yes, I have seen snow and rain, but snow doesn't splash, and spindrift doesn't hurt anything, and I've never seen rain hard enough that an 8x10 tarp...
sure, a bivy has uses ... that's why people use them. But as a requirement for tarp usage in the "Mountain West", not so much. The only factor here that is directly related to whether or not one is...
I guess that assumes that you only own one or the other -- a tarp or a tent. If you own both, then you can still use one or the other depending on conditions. So I think you're right about it coming...
The greatest need of all.....[/QUOTE]
Indeed, no less worthy a category of need!
Or not minimalist enough. I've spent well over 1000 nights camping out in the "Mountain West", with (or without) a tarp, never used a bivy, and never once experienced crawling insects (or arachnids)...
Update: Some recent experiments I did demonstrate that the Blender Ball whisk works just fine without a closed bottle as well -- just stick a spoon into it, and use as a normal whisk.
