I am thinking to buy some property in either the Daleville/Troutville area of Virginia or possibly the Waynesboro area of Pennsylvania.
Does anyone have a good Realtor to recommend?
My job used to require me to be clean shaven. So this summer I let it grow out while doing a 3 month hike. Because that's what I do. When I came back I trimmed it up nice while keeping it as a...
It would be easier to co-manage. I've actually got a team of 3 (including myself) lined up. That should allow time for hiking. If not, I know a couple other folks who may be interested.
I figure if I buy one, I would probably keep the current name. If I build one, the current working title is "my hostel". I should probably come up with something better....
I really am serious and will, of course, have this incorporated as a business and fully insured. That seems the only sensible option. Further research may suggest other possibilities - we will see.
I am working on getting first-hand info on this. And also on what, exactly, the hostel-owner lifestyle is like.
click on standingindian's name (beside his forum post) and a menu will appear. One of the options will be "private message".
thanks for the info guys. I'm looking into those. Wouldn't mind hearing about more.
I'm looking for an AT hostel for sale.
Anybody out there looking to sell?
Anybody know someone looking to sell?
I'm thinking of retiring. Not quitting work. Just quitting working for...
I hike barefoot a good bit. Love it and recommend it for those places where it is appropriate.
I spend a lot of time barefoot and have toughened up my feet a lot. I've also spent a lot of time...
I hike in central Florida regularly. Although sometimes it feels more like wading. So I will often use swimming shorts. My advice is cut that cheese-grater like mesh out go with a pair of briefs...
FLY! Fly like the wind!
My advice for new hikers, in regard to pack weight is: For no reason go over 30 pounds fully loaded. Carrying a 20-25 pound pack is very possible. Under 20 pounds is preferable if you can get...
I eat right out of the pot: Boil water, add bag-o'-dinner, pause, eat. Very straightforward. I do not understand folks who say the pot is hard to clean. It is only 2 dishes (pot and spoon) and...
Packing along trade goods doesn't seem very feasible. Most folks only pack what they need and don't have anything to trade back to you. You may do better mailing it to various maildrops that you...
Town clothes are a personal preference. I prefer to have a clean shirt and pack along an extra lightweight shirt. It makes me feel more civilized both in town and other times. But, as you can see...
I don't worry too much about etiquette and mostly just try to treat everyone with kindness. That seems to take care of things nicely.
This reminds me of the Red Stripe commercial: "total...
As you can see, there are a lot of different ways to look at this and some strongly held opinions.
I believe a good rule of thumb for a beginning hiker wanting to plan routes is 5 to 10...
Knorr does make a serviceable base. A bit high in salt content for my taste, but salt tastes vary. Another good base is Ramen noodles - I throw away the flavoring pack or maybe use half of it (or...
I think the thing to realize here is that food is a big part of the quality-of-life while on the trail. I do not recommend skimping on the food budget: It is very nice after a good day hiking to...
The shorter hikes first is an excellent idea. I did this also before I did my first long-distance. It prepared me in many ways. It did not prepare my body for the day-in/day-out stresses of...
This.
Also, it doesn't sound like you've done a lot of backpacking. You should be warned that there is a period of your body adjusting and that this period is usually pretty uncomfortable and...
I'm told that Sun Tzu says the no plan survives contact with the enemy. This certainly applies to most plans in my life.
Plan too carefully and it becomes a tyranny over your hike. It is...
My main rule for shelters, as in life: Be kind.
