Old name for Katahdin Stream campground. A guy named Fred Pitman ran it and became a park ranger after Percy bought it and gave it to the state.
Bypass when the dam was closed following 9/11/2001.
Is this the Big Creek lot at the picnic area/campground or the one near the former ranger station?
I completed the trail last March. It was a perfect time of year, although the weather in March can vary from snow to 70 degrees. We had lows in the 30's, highs in the 50's, with a couple of days of...
It's a small nit to pick, but the relocation away from town happened in the late '50's. The previous route used the current Carter-Moriah Trail over Mt. Surprise to get into town, then followed the...
When I did the section from Addis Gap north to the NC line in GA, I encountered a group of six who were right out of the mid-70's. They Kelty and Camp trails external frame packs, cotton clothing,...

Bruce, just saw your reply made 6 years after my inquiry. Thanks so much. I have often wondered about her.
Looking back I see that I was last there in 1999. In addition to the briars, a lot of dead spruce and hemlock had come down across the trail. We ripped our clothes up pretty good by the time we...
I haven't been there in ten+ years but there used to be a good spring under the rhododendrons at the back of the campsite. Hopefully someone will post more recent info.
The PGT was bad even when...
Weatherman answered the restaurant issue well. Other areas where a tip is appropriate are taxi drivers, who should get 10-15% of the total fare, and bellhops who carry your bags to the hotel room....
Sorry to learn this. I met him at the ATC meeting in Harrisonburg back in '95 and haven't seen him since. I had no idea he was that old.
As the story is out of Sandwich, NH this is likely the Blueberry Ledge Trail on Whiteface. It's a steep, south-facing trail with open ledges on the upper part.

My WB new messages RSS feed today has about 50 spam messages advertizing DVD's. Looks like somebody got in.
I have both books in my collection. Leroy Dudley was, as some know, a legendary Katahdin guide and caretaker at Chimney Pond in the first part of the 20th century. He was a gifted storyteller in a...
Surprised no one has mentioned the Oua****a Trail. 223 miles through eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas. Backpacker magazine once called it one of the best trails in the US for solitude.

Park at Big Creek ranger station. You'll have an extra 3/4 mile the last day but it's downhill. Better than finding your car with no radio or windows (or just missing). I've never had a problem at...
It's Grandma's youngest daughter and last surviving child, Lucy Seeds of Florida, who will be attending at age 81.
At least 300 miles or prison. Under supervision, of course.
I maintained the section in NC from Big Stamp north to Little Bald, including Bald Mtn. Shelter, for about a decade. I made several trips a year to do trail work, and for all those years I always had...
It's been two years since I was last there but watch out for the fork beyond the gate. I got a mite confused by walking up the right fork, instead of left along the old shelter site. There were lug...
who could have been in the area when it let go.:-?
I met Roger Brickner at Cooper Brook Falls Leanto in Maine back in September of '83. He opened the weather museum in NH about 20 years ago. I had pretty much forgotten him. If he's still around he's...
