Haha. Good point. The closest thing to wilderness I have here is a potted plant.

By saying "the approach of the trail" I believe he meant the "point" of the trail. He wasn't talking about the approach trail itself...but I agree that it isn't a true wilderness experience anymore....
In fact, here's a cleaner one
Equipment (Base)
Specifics
Weight (oz)
Backpack (big enough for a bear canister, where mandated)
And I also realized that there are a couple of duplicates...ignore those.
Ignore the "Buy" section...I forgot to delete that when I posted.
I hope I'm not missing anything but here is the list that I was able to put together...
Equipment (Base)
Specifics
Buy (Y/N)?
I'll get one written up as soon as I can but as I was looking at my gear I realized that there are some items such as toothpaste and soap that I shouldn't have included in my base weight. That helps...
I've been going through my gear for next year's thru-hike attempt and have whittled it all down to a base weight of about 16 lbs. Ultimately I'd love to be under 15 lbs if possible but I'm having a...
Has anyone tried hiking with those wonderful pretzel bites with peanut butter in the middle? They have a decent weight to calorie ratio but I'm not sure how well they'd hold up to a backpacking trip....
If it's worth anything, I absolutely don't plan on dumpster diving but to each his or her own. I want to try to avoid overdoing it in trail towns, however. I know that is easier said than done when...
You're the second person that's mentioned this "Mr. Money" Blog. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
After I wrote this post I realized that $750 per month is about $1.50 per mile for 5 months if I'm doing my math right...So that's not as low as I thought it would be...
I'm sure that there are a number of threads already somewhere out there but darned if I can find them. I must not be using the correct search terms. All I'm looking for are real number from real...
Thanks for the video. I'll check it out.
Thanks. I'm still working out the details but that "leap of faith" is definitely something I'm seriously of needing to take.
Thanks everyone for the encouragement and guidance. I'm working on an online business that will hopefully give me more freedom in the future but these things take time. I'm hoping to "retire" before...
I like that quote. It explains alot. I'll have to check this book out. Thanks!
Yes I got the memo. It was on my desk this morning when I got to work and it made my heart ache for the trail. It's not important what the memo said (half the time they don't pertain to me anyways)...
Not sure yet. I'm not a real big fan of road walking but I know I'll get plenty of it on the Florida Trail. I'm thinking of just hopping a plane to Atlanta from Pensacola. Still trying to decide,...
Not sure how plausible this is but my lease runs up at the end of January so I'm thinking of working my way up the Florida Trail before heading to the AT. I've done quite a bit of backpacking on the...
I'll definitely look into it. My issue is more with my iliotibial band so I've been stretching and massaging it as much as needed. I'm hoping to just keep that up during the hike. Thanks again for...
Haha. I'm sure I could MacGyver somethine together with trekking poles and duct tape but it wouldn't be pretty. And I always carry trekking poles, although I need to buy some new ones since the ones...
I'm hoping to get my pack down to well under 30 this time. I was around 45 on my last trip but I was carrying a bunch of gear that I realized that I wasn't even using. I was taking a look at...
I have a windscreen for it already.
Hey Everyone,
It's been a while since I've been on here. I attempted a hike in 2011 but my knee gave out on me around NOC. I'm hoping to attempt a second hike next year but I want to seriously cut...
