This should be our new national motto....
Seems to me you are already better prepared than most who start a thru hike. The ancient Greeks said: "Know Thyself". So my advice to you is; know your hiker self. For example, are you a southbounder...
To the above I would add Roanoke, VA. Located exactly where you need to break this Virginia blues.
I got a Buff, which can be used for face covering and other things, but I also cary a face mask just in case I go to towns.
Thanks for sharing. Writer of # 8 comic must have hiked the tinker cliffs, VA...
It is NEVER a good practice to leave food in shelters, no matter what the intentions are. Those who will pay the price are the bears and other wild life which will become habituated to human foods...
They are in Grayson Highlands State Park and it is hard to miss them. As for Bubba's, try 276-730-5869. Good luck and enjoy, this is probably the most beautiful Virginia AT section.
Interesting and strange indeed. We may never know what really happened. In the photos he seems in good spirits and well fed. his gear is of high quality. Remind me of the story of Inchworm how also...
I join your recommendation for Bubba. A great and reliable guy. As for the horses, it is neither legal nor smart to feed them. By "fun" I meant to watch them interacting with each other, although...
A great section. Not a local, but I do not think water will be an issue this time of the year. You will pass by some iconic shelters: Thomas Knob, Partnership shelter, Chestnut Knob. Your sons will...
I think somebody once said that the infinity of the universe is matched only by the infinite stupidity of the human race. Can't remember who said it.
$600.00 for chicken soup
NY lifted its mandatory 14 days quarantine. The new guidelines are kind of complicated. Go to: www.governor.ny.gov for new guidelines.
For shuttle, try Barbara 276-388-2906
Apologies for straying from the original thread but, in the spirit of Halloween, a fellow hiker told me about a shelter in the Smokies where a hiker was killed by a bear years ago and since it is...
My bad.....:)
This is what I know of the differences between black bears and grizzlies and if I'm wrong, I would be happy if someone corrects me: The average weight of a male black bear is about 300-400 lbs, a...
They say Birch Springs Gap shelter is haunted. I wouldn't stay there this weekend:dance
Sadly, we will never know if things could/would have turned differently if Mr. Fish did not have a gun and I will say no more about this.
East of I-87 is where you have all NY highlights: West Mountain shelter with best view of Manhattan skyline, Perkins tower (closed now) on Bear mountain, the zoo, the crossing of the Hudson, the...
For disclosure, I never hiked (yet) north of Hanover, NH. But common knowledge among hikers is, in the Whites, you cut by half your daily mileage.
The section you describes starts after Wawayanda shelter, NJ, through the NJ-NY state line all the way to RT17, NY. It's endless boulder scrambling and frustrating PUDs which ends with the infamous...
That's a tough one....many pet owners regard their pet as a family member
In the picture you posted, we can see the skin is clearly broken. So I'm just curious, did you have to take the rabies shots? and if so, who paid for them? Because they can be quite expensive.
Otherwise, I would recommend to spend the night at West Mountain shelter (bring your own water) for best NYC skyline view in the morning, before the pollution takes in.
