FYI, my past couple of weekends have been nearly mosquito-free in Juniper Wilderness. A hard freeze is expected in this area Christmas night so bugs will be minimal for a while.
Duh, I completely forgot about the second pic which makes more sense.
Tree limbs, bears the berg is taking a beating. John camping in right off the trail. That's the one leading out to the fir grove (54A)?
Check out the Durston X-Mid 2. I have the X-Mid one and it's a great tent for the money. The two seems to have the same great reviews.

just 3oz more than the LW 3D pad. I have both and use the mega for car camping or short overnighters. Beware, in some...
300ish is about right for these carrying under 30lb loads. FWIW, I switched to the the "pro XA" shoe with "3D" chassis and they last a bit longer and feel more stable under load.
Rolling it forward creates drag. It'll take at least a 10th of a second off your top speed.
A snowed-in fir grove is something I gotta do. Quite a get together at hangover, must have been fun.

Never had a problem is GSMNP backcountry, except for the odd camp bear.
Absolutely correct. If I'm not mistaken there have been a couple of members here that have become despondent enough to end their lives in the wilderness. These are very tough times for quite a few...
This is a short review of my experiences with the X-mid. I stumbled across this tent on Drop and was intrigued by its features and price. As a dedicated trekking pole user, I own a Notch and am...
Did not know him but enjoyed his posts here. Condolences to his family and friends.
Have you looked at the Tarptent double rainbow?
I've had the X-mid 1P out for a week in some wet conditions. I'll do a review soon.

I see bears on about 75% of my smokies hikes. The most important thing is to remain calm. I know this will be difficult. The bear can most definitely sense your anxiety so it is important to minimize...
What really helped me for mountain hiking was adding weighted step-ups to my workout. Grab a dining room chair and two 25lb dumbbells. Place the chair against the wall and, holding the dumbbells...
I'm a little more than half way there with the Allak. I've been seeing other tents on some trips (please don't tell her) so it'll be a while before I'll get to 700.
Walter, my pic is in the fir grove as you were coming from "butt" rock. BTW, the all mesh inner option makes a big difference in warmer temps. With both doors tied back and the large half-moon vents,...
My Hilleberg Allak (2p) is 13 years old. It is as weatherproof as it was on day one. I have used it hundreds of nights and ridden out some mind-boggling weather in it without any water getting...
I use the Gorilla for three season trips and couldn't be happier. It even swallows my bareboxer can. Oh and have have a red bandana tied on the outside for color.

I do not carry merino bottoms unless daytime temps are going to be lower than 40. Once you get to camp and get the tent up, get a fire going, and have everything ready for sleep then just crawl in...
Correct. Comes with numbered snozzles to prevent cross-contamination.
In the vestibule. Tap them out in the morning to see if something crawled in. Never had a problem.
