You might also want to read Hopeful's journal. He has done the Trail twice now, the last time in 2011.

I did that section this year in late March - had all my winter gear but sweated my can off. Biting flys were out in force and the ticks were just starting to appear. Like most of the posts above,...
Ever gotten a good look at those Ranger-trainees around Gooch Gap? Talk about Zombies...

the old phart - at least so far - of this 'boomer thread, having been born in 1949. I attempted a thru in '07 but screwed my knee up in the Smokies. Can't get permission from The Wife for another...
NIce. Thanks for sharing these with us.
Most excellent. Thanks for posting this. One of these days....
Ya know, I went off trail at Clingman's after screwing up my knee in the Smokies, but I miss the time I did spend on the trail. Just every now and then I will hear a sound, smell some wood smoke,...
I will be doing the Springer to Neels section starting on Sunday (11/2). Hope I run into a couple of SOBO's as well.
Ummmm..... did he slip on bacon grease?? :)
And I can't carry enough munchy-type snacks....
Nope, neither of those - but thanks, though... These guys were planning on opening their own outfitter's store when they finished. This was around April 24 - 26 of last year.
Thanks again.
While I was in the Smokies last April I hiked for awhile with a couple that were thru-hiking - Josh and Sara. Anyone know if they made it all the way to Maine? Last I saw of them was at the hiker...
The shelter is not bad and there are several good camping sites at Springer, good water, privy and cables. Sunset from the rock slab is most excellent. The next shelter will probably be full...
Bare Bear - that was some Uber Trail Magic last year at Stecoah Gap. Most appreciated!
Sorry your thru has been postponed... it has just been postponed, right?
Absolutely beautiful sunset from Springer, well worth the time to sit and reflect on the journey one is about to undertake. Plenty of camping, good water, and a chance to talk and get to know...
Bill Jacksons in St. Pete.... if they don't have it, you probably don't need it...
When I was there in late January/early Feb. last year they had some very knowledgeable folks on staff. Prices...
Don't forget the earplugs.... I forgot the earplugs.... lesson learned.... don't forget the earplugs...
Just a question - have you tried to use your Leki's while wearing the Lobster Claw gloves? Will they let you grip the poles though the straps OK?
Given the potential water shortage I would probably take a filter - you can always send it home if it turns out you don't need it, but if you're scraping the bottom of the spring/creek for some H2O,...
Most Excellent news!! Congrats to the both of you - can't wait to hear more details!! I am like really envious!!
Socrates - these are great. I had to go off trail at Clingman's with a bad knee so seeing these is kinda bittersweet. But keep them coming - those of us that aren't hiking are living vicariously...
Well, I gave it another shot and made it from Fontana to Clingman's Dome. Knee is still not doing well so I am going to go off trail again to figure out what the problem is and if it can be fixed.
