This is something I hope to do! I've done this once before and had a delightful afternoon hike with a stranger.
Thank you for this information! That's comforting to know. A lot of the trails I go on are pretty desolate for miles, so I wasn't sure what the situation was like up there. I definitely plan on...
Yes, I've been before and have no intention of just showing up. Since I'm out of state I can't yet reserve a parking pass, and this is why I'm planning two months ahead of time. The park is indeed...
Hi all,
It's been a while since I posted here, but I wanted to pick y'all's brains again as I got so much great info when I section hiked in GA and NC a few years back.
I'm looking to hike up...
So true. I live in Charlotte and the plane noise is absolutely ridiculous. Moving west into the mountains you still get a lot of the flight path noise and the motorcycles. I love western NC, but this...
I thought it didn't upload my first attempt, but there ya go. You get two. Whoops!

There's me, slackin' my way through Baxter State Park and perfecting my cairn game
I had thought about that! There will doubtless be tons of people out there that day, I'm sure. Hey, if you are in the area, let me know :) Thanks for the idea!
Thank you!
Thank you! There is no one really we can ask in our group, although maybe in a pinch... Good luck to you too, and congratulations to your daughter! :D
Thank you :)
Thanks, Bryon! Doh! If you happen to be hiking in that day, let me know ;) Sounds good!
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone might be able to recommend a wedding officiant for a small ceremony at Max Patch this October (yes, this year). Doesn't need to be someone who is ordained or...
Any good recommendations for a winter day hike near the I-40 crossing? I'm going on a road trip and will have a day to play with, so I thought I'd sneak in some AT miles :) I thought about just...
Thanks for the tips! slbirdnerd, I've made a note of their number. Thanks!
Thanks, everyone. I'm ok hitching but my hiking buddy is nervous about it. We're starting at Springer over the weekend and so we probably won't get that far until sometime during the week. It looks...
Anyone know of a shuttle to/from Helen GA from Unicoi Gap or somewhere near there? Or would I be better off trying to hitch?
"Geocaching" :)
I second the recommendation! It's tons of fun and is great for all levels. You can download the official app on your phone if you don't have or want to invest in a handheld GPS.
The elliptical machine is another good bet. Set the tension high for a while and do circuits. I find this helps strengthen my leg muscles.
I've also found that core-strengthening workouts help...
I second this. I have a women's Flash 58 for backpacking. I haven't done a thru-hike and am not currently planning one, but for my purposes it's been great so far and really lightweight. It fits...
Ah. I am in Columbia, but I train in the mountains in NC on the weekends. Middle Prong Wilderness, Shining Rock Wilderness, Pisgah National Forest, etc. The only thing Columbia would be good training...
Thanks for your log, juniorace! Really helpful for me to see what other people are doing. I'm hoping it will be a bit cooler than it was in mid-May, but who knows? I've been training with a full pack...
I was just there yesterday. I did part of the MTS, Art Loeb, Graveyard Ridge, and Ivestor Gap.
Art Loeb is a beautiful trail that rambles over some balds. There are a lot of wild blueberries that...
Thanks so much for the information, everyone! I really appreciate it.
I'm putting Neel Gap on my itinerary as a place to stop. I'm trying to get my pack under 20 lbs., and the ability to restock...
