Woody Gap is very safe. It is now busy 24/7 even in the winter. Apparently the entire ATL metro area discovered this wonderful quiet area during the pandemic and now refuse to leave.

Yes, bear canister is required for overnighting from Jarrard Gap to Neels Gap. But simple solution is to overnight at Lance Creek and hike through the canister zone the following day. I cannot speak...
There are established sites 100 yds north of Justus Creek and plenty of other campsites along the trail. Most notably on top of Sassafras Mtn, Horse Gap, and Cooper Gap. But this is GA so you can...
Horse Gap would be my preference. As you noted Cooper Gap gets a lot of traffic and sometimes Army Ranger games. Both are safe for parking though.
Happy Hiking!

Too early in the season to be overgrown.
Went out for a short hike this morning in freezing temperatures. Coldest mid May day on the Georgia AT I can remember. And we will repeat it tomorrow morning.
Early spring up here at elevation. You can see from the image that the leaves are just starting. Other than poison ivy we have wild flowers everywhere. In my neck of the woods the trail is in great...
Looks like a bumper crop this year. Poison Ivy as far as the eyes can see. Image taken today just north of the old grassy gap roadbed about 1 mile north of Gooch Gap.

Did the same thing I do on most days...took a nice walk on the AT. And it has been the best spring ever.:D
His overhead was way to high to support an AT Hostel.
Someone mentioned a June hike. The bear canister restriction ends June 1 and will not start up again until March 1 2020.
Ain't no stinkin' squeeters on the trail in Ga. With all the rain we will have plenty of gnats though. They don't bite but will annoy the crap out of you. Shelters will not be an issue in June. The...
Yes, the trail in late March is a zoo. The correct answer for meeting your goals has been provided by gpburdelljr. However, it should be noted that there is very little growth in late March unless we...
Was out on the trail for a shortened 5 miles today. My poor old dog hurt her leg coming down Ramrock Mtn. Must have sprained something on the slick tread. Tomorrow and Thursday I will likely see some...
Gooch Gap / FS 42 AKA Cooper Gap Rd is less than 1.5 miles further north of Gooch Mtn Shelter. Most all shuttle drivers service that location.
This same scenario plays out a half dozen times daily here in March and April. Everyday I see folks who have developed stress injuries or have the "deer in the headlights" thing going on that will...
There is no good place to set up a tent at Tritt Gap. It is a narrow gap between Ramrock and Black Mtns. There is a footpath that leads down to Wildhog Creek Circle where you might find a spot to set...
Great idea. I am all for it as I am about to head out for my morning AT hike where already in mid Feb I will find throngs of thru hikers making the trail a muddy bog. And let's not forget the trash...
No. There will not be a space available on Memorial Day unless the weather is really bad. Your best bet, and let's just keep this between you and me;), is to park at Wolf Pen Gap on SR 180. Get your...

Amicalola Falls State Park - start of the approach trail
Has anyone successfully used Uber from ATL to AFSP? How did it work out?
Met a guy on the trail today near Gooch Gap that is just now starting his NOBO. Not for me, but with the proper gear and enough cash for zero days you can start anytime.
Although I have never seen the new order I have spoken with two different USFS Rangers who indicated to me that a new order is in effect. Neither could tell me a new expiration date. Also, GATC...
Middle September weather is very transitional. Usually pretty dry with cool morning temps (50s) and highs in the low to mid 70s at elevation. But some years the summer heat and humidity hangs on into...
