That's the Ichihara Oil Refinery. Do a search for it, you'll find tons of footage of that exact explosion on CNN.
For future reference: 'Mushroom clouds' are a result of air pressure and...
Thru-Hiked in 2006, and cannot say I noticed much of a frat party atmosphere to the trail (aside from one wild weekend at the Doyle, but that's hardly unexpected and easily avoided). This may (or...
I know the PATC trail crews have already been out and clearing. I expect the trail from SNP up through mid-PA is in pretty good shape.
Not like you need to yellow-blaze through SNP. The trail isn't much longer or harder than the road is, really ;)
Skyline Drive through SNP, however, they can and will close.
I hike solo mostly because trying to keep up with other people is a pain ;)
This is the method I took. It's certainly the hardest of the options, but all you need to do to make it work is keep doing it. The trail will beat you into shape quick enough.
I carried the mini-works with me, myself, and had no problems with it. It does clog a lot faster than the others, but also cleans a lot easier. I thought it was worth it for the 'screw on' feature...
I stayed at Fine's this year and have no complaints. He has a no-frills room for hikers at a much lower cost, but as it was blazing hot I took him up on a nice air-conditioned single. You can call...
I'm having the flip side of this problem. No matter how late I stay up the night before, I always wake up at sunrise. :(
If you're in that much of a hurry, just buy a steripen.
Just to show how impossible it is to predict, I didn't get rained on once in the state of Georgia this year. Drought conditions and all that. It was pretty hot, too. All you can do is guess what...
This year, at least, the shelter was completely infested with fleas. Everyone who stayed there came out covered in bites. I recommend staying on the trail for another quarter mile or so. You'll...
That entry reminded me of my own horrible night spent in the Bryant Ridge shelter. It's a very new shelter, a neat design, good location, and completely infested with fleas. Nobody got out of it...
No, but as a I child I used to leave bags of them in the car during the summer in order to create a horrifying (yet tasty) Gummie Amoeba. :sun
Conversely I just turned mine off and that worked just fine. It probably depends on the model of phone.
I believe I know my cousins better than you do :)
Ignoring the fact that dumping a cooler off beside the road, regardless of intention, actually is illegal ;)
I object to the use of the word 'other' in the subject line. It implies that the AT in PA is a good hike, a blatant falsehood! ;)
At least some of them do. It may be a regional thing. I have cousins who live near Atlantic City who 'worsh' things in 'wooder'.
But you know what doesn't rule? Opening the cooler and finding garbage that has been rotting there for several weeks at the very least. Know what's even worse? Finding one of those at every road...
You'd probably kick yourself afterwards if you didn't bring a camera. It's definitely worth it. If you're worried about it getting wet, there's two simple solutions:
1: Buy a really crappy...
Numbers are deceiving. "Five million" people use the AT every year. What does this mean? It means 4,990,000 people get out of their cars in the Great Smokies, Shenandoah, or any of the other...
Actually, this relates to an actual bad thing about Miss Janet's. The place is TOO good, and thus people don't leave. When I showed up there were people swarming all over the place, a couple dozen...
