I used an ArcBLast for my 2016 thru hike. Did not use a pack liner. Kept my sleeping bag in the ZPacks dry bag. The only time I got anything soaked in my backpack was when I did not fully close my...
I sort of figured I carried my pack up the approach trail, all the way from springer to KSC, i could carry it another 10 miles (roundtrip Katahdin - KSC). My base weight was about 11 pounds so I...
Thanks for all the feedback and links. I really don't want to be hiking in a lot of snow. For external reasons, my start date has moved to June 18. I realize now that I should do a 3 leg hike -

I am considering a PCT flip - flop since I cannot start until about June 12. Leaving from Echo Lake, would hope to make Canada by late August, take a week off centered around labor day weekend ,...

The titanium stakes that ZPACKS sells worked fine with the Duplex. I cannot remember a single night that the wind lifted a stake out. I can remember a few times where being able to firmly plant a...
Mega,
Check out https://whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php/120672-Do-I-need-to-use-Permethrin?p=2098301&highlight=#post2098301 . US military claims the method is good for 1 year. For me, it...
I used an in line sawyer mini for my thru hike and continue to use it. I kept my platypus bladder laying on its side inside my pack, on the top. The filter was in-line in the pack as well.

How much do Pro Bars, or any other bar cost on a per pound basis? At least $10-15. Some, much more. Do you want to pay this much for sugar? Sure, raisins have a lot of sugar, but they are what, less...
Reread the post. It says the bars weigh 85g. They are 19 - 27% sugar and about 123 cal/oz.
That's a pretty broad, sweeping statement based upon...
your own poor choices. My 4000 cal diet consists of nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, dried fruit and veggies. Maybe 1000 calories of it...
Sorry, but whoever said food is not allowed is mistaken:
Solid food items (not liquids or gels) can be transported in either your carry-on or checked bags. Liquid or gel food items larger than...
The below is all regarding carry on bags. I never check a bag.
Some people appear to assume that if it worked for them, then it is allowed by TSA. This is absolutely not the case. TSA uses their...
Wouldn't eat Pro Bars, except for the nut butters, the others are high in sugar and not that high in calories.
Pro Bar bites 190 cal , 46 g = 117 cal/ oz, 25% sugar
Pro Bar meal 370 cal, 85 g =...
Pro bars, like cliff bars are pretty poor in that regard.

Starting in Denver on July 18/19. On AT I would be at about 20 MPD. Given the altitude and the fact that I live at sea level, I expect to be somewhat slower. So, we might meet just before Durango....
You can get a food drop at Mary Jo road 1/2 way through the hundred mile wilderness through Shaw's in Monson. It allows you to enjoy the wilderness a little more. One of the nicest parts of the...
The fact is, during the part of my thru hike, from June through end of August, I wore my rain jacket only once, in the whites. The thought occurred to me to send it home, but I kept it for that one...
Care to list them?
Overkill and somewhat duplicative, just depends on how important your base pack weight is to you.
For my thru hike, the sorest part of my body was usually my shoulders from using hiking poles! Or maybe sleeping on my side with a neoair?
Alternatively, just check your poles, knife and stove and carry everything else on.
TSA website says you cannot carry on hiking poles. But, I did just that at Portland, Maine airport. No issue whatsoever. Alcohol stove was no problem either. I would never check my pack. What happens...
