I scared multiple deer around blind turns on the BMT near Fontana on Easter this year. They ran off, but I used my bell from then on. It might not have gone so well with a bear.
I don't have personal experience, but it seems that you wind up in a rather tight knit group no matter how you start.
I've read that people starting in groups can experience some serious strain...
I'm only 18 so I might not be who you're looking for, but plan to hit Katahdin on June 9th.

Does anybody have experience with this pad? The salesman at REI described it as a cross between the Exped SynMat and the BA Insulated Air Core pad. I'm having trouble finding much information on this...
I've been emailing Phil from 100milewilderness.info, and their "all inclusive" thing sounds like a good option, especially with the extra resupply option in the wilderness. Any opinions or review on...
The bus line is the Concord Coaches.
Amtrak does run to Bangor, I have my tickets. Its a train to Portland and a bus to Bangor, all under amtrak.
Oh yeah, I'll arrive around 2:30pm in Bangor.
Sounds good, but I'm fairly oblivious. What bus to Medway? Is it just normal public transportation?
Any suggestions on shuttle services or anybody that could give me a ride? I was hoping to start my thru-hike then, and need a lift from the Train/Bus station.
See you there! I'll arrive on the 11th, so I won't hit the trail until a day or two after you, but I might catch you at some point.

I'm getting new gear for my thru hike and have read several hydration system threads, but I have one unresolved question. What do you use for your water in camp?
I've read varying opinions on the...
Yeah, there's been nonstop wind and rain here for awhile now.
I've been there, I hardly slept all night.
I was in a bug net under a tarp during the solo period of my month long outward bound expedition. I didn't completely clean my bowl out the first night...
Just bought a Fly Creek UL2. It looks great, I'll just have to see how it works in March!
