Ditto. Not something you want to smell when you're in the outdoors.
I answered my own question on my hike.
I ended up writing the day's events in my journal, fixed my sleeping quarters, got water, cooked, got more water, had good conversation with others and went...
I spent two days in Cusco and glad I did. I got winded going up an easy flight of stairs from time to time. Cusco must mean "stairs" in Spanish. :) I think your sleeping bags will be fine. I actually...
I did that trail last November. It will be cooler for you in September 40's to 70's.
I made a YouTube video of my trek:

These are...
Don't really listen to music because I need to listen to my surroundings when I hike. Going to sleep is a different story.
Fleet Foxes or My morning Jacket
In GSMNP I felt more at ease and slept better with it. I always carry it on every hike. Never used it once. But it's there if you need it. (Ain't just for bears!) If I need to discourage a threat...
Agree. Although I do like the smell from a distance.

May start at Springer next time but this section is closest to home. Hard to believe these...

Weight. I bought a Kelty pack that was two lbs. heavier than another choice with more bells and whistles. Should have gone w/ a 3lbs. pack and just made it work.

We didn't even know there was a storm until the next day when we heard from a day hiker people had been killed. Rained pretty heavy for a couple of hours and that was it. No heavy winds at...
I was at Tri-Corner shelter when it hit. All it did was rain heavy for a couple of hours. Wind was not that bad. We had no idea until the next afternoon anything serious had even happened. I doubt...
Thursday Tricorner had water but it was slow. Good enough.
Davenport had it Friday but by Saturday morning when we woke up it was dry. NOBO 3/4 mile from the shelter (after crossing the gravel...
I've always liked it since Scouts 35 years ago. And I suck at fishing.
I wanted to say thanks for all the info that I've learned here to make this a more pleasurable reality.
I've been on the AT before a little and lots trails that are all around it in TN. but...

I have the capacity for three liters with my Camelbak but take roughly two. For me that's about 15 miles on an as needed basis.
Excellent! Thanks for posting it.
Sweet. Thanks.
As far as cooked foods I'm planning on bringing TVP and making all kinds of instant meals.
Talk about light food and extremely long shelf life! I swear, TVP w/ rice, pepper &...
Non cooked) I'm thinking peanut butter/jelly & bagel.
You?
Well said. The GSMNP is in my back yard. People come from all around the world to experience this biosphere. It's exceptional to say the least.
Wow.. really?
What I really meant was when you MUST stay at a shelter. As in can't hike for one reason or another. Although I did like all the "hike more" posts. Wood carving, magnifying glass & bingo. Awesome....
Cards, frisbee, bourbon, just relax... all of the above?
I have Trails Illustrated by NGO specifically for GSMNP. All in all it's worth the $15. It's like the GSMNP map but digital and you can fly through in 3-D, highlight your trials and pinpoint trails...
Thanks Parkrat!
