I was hiking there one day and a friend with me came up to this. He shook his head and as he was walking away, he said "Pack it in, pack it out". It was very funny at the time.
What I did helped a great deal. First, I bought ecco shoes to work in. Along with that, I was told not to put my feet on the floor when I woke up in the morning until I had on birkenstocks. On the...
Jaxhiker,
I live in Olustee part of the year. I have not been able to make it there over the winter but I hope to be there a good bit next fall and winter. I have access to a kawasaki mule if...
just below the bald on SI ( i am pretty sure it is to the northwest) is a spring. There should be a marker there, it is about 50 feet from the trail. At least it used to be one there.
I failed to mention the trail crosses National forest Road 241 right near the paved road 250 at the top of the map
Here is a map of what I am talking about

Don't know if anyone ever does this but you could put in at the Olustee Battlefield (east of Lake City) and hike to a point on National Forest Road , take a left and walk down to the hogpen landing...
Those photos bring back memories. I woke up up on SI one morning and all you could see were white cloud below you. No peaks, no trees not anything but white clouds. It was gorgeous.
Well just dang. I really thought I would not do any hiking again. Now, after seeing your photos, I gotta put it on my list to do it again. The scenery was beautiful and it appears that making new...
Nice to have those memories Hot Flash!
I hope you experienced hikers will bear with me here as I describe the two times I hiked on the trail. Both were on Standing Indian (SIM)from the parking place off Deep Gap road.
Myself, a friend...
If you take
Deep Gap road, east of Hayesville, NC to the end of National Forest Road, bear right, there is (or used to be ) an area to park at the foot of SIM
When I visited Standing Indian years ago, there was a spring just below the bald. There was a trail to it. As you are hiking north, it is on your right. It seemed to be a steady stream, however, very...
thanks yellowsirocco and onesock. What you both described is what I suspected. I don't doubt that a false echo may be involved but I do believe it is often a weather phenomenon.
Another image from March 16. If you notice on the first image, it was snowing. On the last two images it was raining. It it were only a false echo, seems like it would always be one or the other. I...
Very well could be a false echo. Here it is tonight. There is rain headed that way but it appears to be raining at that area early.

Yeah, I am guessing that water vapor is coming in and is blocked by a series of high peaks. IT is amazing that nowhere else will there be rain or snow in the winter except there.
I look at a weather map every morning very early. I notice that there is one place in the southeast that gets more rain or snow than any other area. When there is not rain or snow anywhere, it is...
