You don't need to wear shorts and carry pants, just pick one. Convertible pants are nice because you can unzip the bottoms when you go to sleep to keep your bag safe from the mud.

Talon is in good shape, a bit dirty so needs a cleaning. No rips or tears. A small hole in the fabric covering back frame but is completely cosmetic.

I waited more than an hour to get into Buena Vista, VA. Getting out of Gatlinburg, TN was also a pain. A sign really would have helped in those situations.

They are great for food in my experience. If you want to keep something dry though, look somewhere else. I had good luck with granite gears dry sacks. The thicker cuben fiber bags can be pretty...

I would not bother with a wind jacket. A rain coat will do that and more, while only being slightly more in weight. Just remember to bring rain pants. They are worth it.
Stick with the 20*. Being as it is a quilt it should be adaptable enough for the warmer weather too.
Save yourself time, hastle, and some pain. Just buy a comfortable backpack. There are plenty of comfortable ones out there that are not too heavy. Sure they might be a pound or two more than...
I really like the Osprey Talon 44 as well as the Granite Gear Blaze. The Deutr ACT ZERO also looks very nice.
