I believe the ATC does have a plan, which is to encourage flip flop hikes, taking some pressure off a Springer start. This may not be a complete remedy, but it can only help.

Why yes. I'd say the AT is our government at it's finest. If anything, the NPS is underfunded.
Doubtful if ever. As one who spends a lot of time in that Park, I can attest to the LACK of crowds most days. In fact, if you remove all those pesky thru-hikers who want to tramp through Shen the...
I figured they may have been there a while. I pick up a lot of junk left behind by day hikers when I'm out on the trail. Empty propane tanks, folding lawn chairs, water bottles, etc....
Found a set of house keys on a fob while doing trailwork on Buck Hollow/Buck Ridge today -- just in case anyone in here dropped them.
My YT experience was with the original version and they were a FAIL. They were replaced with Kathoola walking crampons and later the microspikes, so I can comment on all. The crampons made my feet...
No offense taken by me. Most distance hikers are looking for those big miles when they hit Shenandoah. The two helpers were day hikers on their way to Mary's Rock overlook. The section from Thornton...
While building new stone steps on my AT section in Shenandoah today, not one but TWO hikers stopped to help me with the trail work. I've been an AT overseer since 1996 and this is the first time...
Not every hike needs to be big miles and elevation. Take your husband to an accessible trail and bring a picnic basket. Being out is its own joy, and a crisp October day should not be missed.
Now,...
+2 on the Corona saw, but it cuts on the PULL stroke. A lot less likely to bind than a bow saw.
I had them a couple years, but only wore them occasionally. These were pretty low mileage boots. I have an ancient pair of Lowas that I hiked the first pair of Vasque soles bald on, had them re-soled...
Mine was a WB rant/warning. When I went to REI today I calmly explained the issue, stated that it made the company look bad, and politely asked for and was given a refund. Faulty boot soles are...
The soles on my low mileage Vasque Wasatch boots failed completely this weekend. In talking with another guy a trailhead this weekend, he mentioned that he had the same boots and they failed in the...
As an AT overseer, I pick up what falls off other people's packs. I have picked up a number of S-'biners from the Trail, but never a standard carabiner. In my experience, it would be the 'biner most...
Advisory from Shenandoah National Park this morning:
"Be advised that Bear Fence Mountain Hut is closed due to Bear activity in that area. It will remain CLOSED until the bear is trapped."
As I understand it, the thru-hiker was cooking his dinner back at the hut, away from his tent when the bear paid the visit. The bear was reluctant to leave but the Ridgerunner managed to chase it...
The ridgerunner witnessed the incident. He also confirmed that all food was hung on the bear poles. The Park is aware of the problem and is taking steps to deal with it.
A section of trail appearing underblazed during peak summer growth may seem overblazed after autumn leaf drop. The trail section so easy to follow when the ground is clear disappears entirely in deep...
PATC is using Jeremy's Run for a Rigging Workshop project in June. We won't get 15 stream crossings built, but some will be improved and everybody will learn how to use a Griphoist. Of course any...
I've hiked Central District Shenandoah repeatedly, but usually with a crosscut saw and I always find something to cut. Stopping to buck up a blowdown during the various seasons of the year makes...
Morels in Shenendoah arrive when "the leaves on an oak tree are as big as a mouse's ear". Look for them where there's lots of poplars.
...was on the section from Shenandoah's Thornton Gap to Mary's Rock in 1998. After I was done blazing my section, the PATC SOT told me that Myron Avery built and maintained that section in his day...
There's a headache (or worse) coming to anyone beneath one of those falling limbs.
