we're lookin for a hike in Illinois, somewhere that is like the AT where we can do a small section hike of maybe 40-50 miles without worrying about camping in specific areas or paying some huge fee...
my brother seems to think that hardly no one wears fleece pants as their second layer when winter hiking...is this true? how many of you out there wear fleece pants when you winter hike?
i'm 10 hours from springer mountain according to mapquest
because i love my dogs and enjoy their company.
i dont plan to go as far as fontana dam so i'm not worried about hiking illegally with my dog ;)

I want to take my dog with me when we go backpacking but i know dogs arent allowed in the smokeys, correct?
so where do the smokeys begin? like how far can i go from springer mountain until i hit...
ok well we've decided to cut it alot shorter, only going to do about 50-60 miles..so where can we park our car that is near the trail about 50-60 miles into the trail?

we are planning on hiking in the south, starting at springer mountain..not sure where we will end up as of yet
we basically have all of our stuff, sleeping bag,...
we plan to start hiking at 4 am anywayz no matter how many miles we do
we might be able to do the whole 150..depends on how in shape i get by the time..i have 2 months..so hopefully i'll be able to build myself up to it

i just got my first back pack, i got a Kelty Red Cloud 5600
took it on a 8 mile hike 2 days ago, i like it :)
not sure if we are going to make it...we only have 7 days for hiking..we shall see
