I never did get any of those stamps made. I could still have them done. Would love some ideas of what people might like to see.
If it were me I would leave the car at Clingman's and get a shuttle to Fontana.
When are you going?
I feel your pain, it happened to me on another trail last year. It just plain sucks.
Thanks Ox for the explanation and the work. I am taking a group up the eagle Creek trail in a month and will be staying at Spence and Birch Spring so this is very helpful info
I am sure it will be fine to stay at, but there is tons of garbage and lots of horses and their crap there at the site. It is a pretty heavily used site. Hopefully this bump up will get you some more...
Thanks, I didn't know about the flags. If I see an orange flag I should just look around for water?
Forgot to add that CS 50 is usually pretty nasty, might be nicer to get a site at Smokemont. You could mooch some food off the car tourists :)
I was told the other day by the backcountry office that all the AT on the southern portion is dry. Of course we just got pummeled by rain in the last couple of days so don't know how that changes...
If you are going to park at Byron Reece trailhead you had better get there before early in the day. They have shrunk the parking lot and you better believe if you you are not directly centered...
camping on Sassafras is awesome. Bring water like everyone else said. I don't like camoing at Horse Gap but I don't like camping at roads.
Camelbak makes a contraption to put in the bladder to keep it open so it will dry out.
I'm with map man. Hike on to Deep Gap so you can pick up where you left off.
I have ATT and I get cell phone service at Deep Gap.
If you need a shuttle I would call Ron Haven in Franklin.
You should be in the midst of alot of thru hikers. I can't imagine that you would be alone.
If it's the Deep Gap in North Carolina just over the GA line then you will go down the forest service road and turn right which will take you into Franklin
@Driver - I haven't used the sock but I do use a more rigid night splint which makes the pain more bearable in the morning.
@Safari - I totally get what you are saying. I have custom orthotics and...
Had surgery on my right foot in 2008 and was the best thing I did. Nothing else worked for me. I tried the shots, physical therapy, custom orthotics. I just had surgery on my left foot a month ago....
Unfortunately I have to wear compression/bike shorts. Chafing is a nightmare for me.
I typically use a skirt, with compression shorts underneath.
I used man's pants before but they never fit me quite right
If you call first thing you shouldn't have any problems getting reservations. I have only ever had a issue one time out of about 12 trips in the Smokies
I am not a thru hiker but my addiction to hiking helped lead to the demise of my marriage.
I think it would be crazy. But I find them terribly uncomfortable. Besides that, they have no tread whatsoever.
You thought wrong. He wasn't being rude or a total jerk off like some other people on the forums so let him speak. Sheesh.
I was woefully out of shape when I did it so I thought it was pretty bad. It is all uphill.
Alot of people I have met on the trail feed their dogs some puppy food as well. Maybe it's higher in calories/protein. And lots of scooby snacks
