Peanut butter, snickers, oatmeal, fig newtons, cookies, bagels, fruit (occasionally) Clif bars, cheese, combos pretzels snacks, etc....
Honey Stinger gel packs. I enjoy them while hiking, or trail running.
Caleb - thanks for the heads up about Promised Land. I've had a few courses through the bigger hills at the end. Fun stuff!! C ya' on the trails. :)
Sounds like a fun trip to me! Wish I could join ya'....
Always extra miles.... I don't wear a GPS. I manage what comes my way. It is what it is and all that... best way to enjoy the course IMO.
Terrapin Mt March 17th, and Promised Land is up next...
It was a fast course. Highly recommended for a 1st ultra. There were over a dozen that stated this was their first at the pre-race diner. Good Times!!!
Not yet, but will this fall. I'm taking on all 6 races of the Beast Series this year. Going to be an awesome experience!
Took on the 22nd running of the Holiday Lake 50k+ in Appomatox, VA this weekend. Dr. David Horton, notorious ultra-runner, AT and PCT speed hiker, and over all nice fella really knows how to put on...
I also like to fix meal near a creek or water source, and then hike on a bit to find a great view or location to tie up my hammock. It's a great rest break, and helps the meal settle instead of...
It can still get below 40F in April at night - anywhere along the AT. A Z lite won't keep you warm in those temps. I have the same hammock, and pad as you and I use a 40F UQ with the pad often in...
Minimo is great for one person that heats water. Cooking enough for 2, in the pot... I'd suggest a larger set up.
Gotta do a survey to be able to access article....
"vlogs" or video logs on youtube No central repository like trailjournals.com Gotta do some searching, but it seems that this is the more popular way to journal a thru.
I've ran the trail twice (Laurel Highlands Ultra race) and loved it's beauty!!! Starting in Ohiopyle - the first 7 miles are the toughest. A few good climbs, but great views along the way. Plenty...
Flyin' Brian Robinson hike the AT, PCT and CDT in one calendar year - slept under a poncho tarp.
I'll be hiking with you in spirit.
Semper Fi!!!
Not heard of this, but think I'll try it with a small spoonful or two at home.
Double check with Ranger as you enter the park. They may ask you to fill out a back country tag, where you list parking, etc. This s mostly for safety, in case of fire or something so they have an...
PA in June can be quite warm during the day, and chilly at night. I suggest summer bag, with a nice micro-fleece or soft long sleeve just in case. A rain jacket will do if you are watching pack...
The weather has been unpredictable. Summer bag with warm base layer to put on if needed would be suggested for the early fall hikes.
Which ever is more comfortable for you... I prefer running shorts. My key to no-chaffing is Body Glide.
Nice photography! That place is kinda magical. It's been a few years since I've been up there.
At any time of the year there are folks out enjoying the trail. July in VA is no exception. You will meet many interesting, wonderful folks out there. No need to worry about a partner. It's one...
Glad ya'll didn't starve to death! Sometimes I get a little "giddy" when I get to spend some time on the trail. It's magic makes me forget everything else. :-) As the saying goes.... A bad day on...
