Thanks for using the rubber tips, too bad other hikers consider they are doing the trail a favor by using metal or carbide tips.
I assume you are using 2 sticks instead of 1. Using 2 sticks...
I wore short Outdoor Research (OR) gaiters. They keep out trash, elements, small critters. They also protect laces, keeps them tied, protect the majority of the boots, but most of all they do a...
That's right, I read that. Pretty funny. They also pointed out he was giving the foxes treats, as pointed out, in some of the films the foxes would lick his fingers and follow him around like a...
The part where the lost hikers where looking for a water fountain in the article that C.Coyle linked to, reminded me of a group asking me if the shelters had a pay phone. This was back before the...
Treadwell treated the time with the Bears and other wildlife like he was the Mr. Rogers of the Alaskan wilderness. Well Tim, it turned out to be a "Grizzly day in the neighborhood".

Another suggestion. Pilot Mtn on the Art Loeb/MTS trail offers the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets I've ever seen. Very tight spot to camp however.

Remember the MTS trail incorporates other established...
This is about as good as it gets to help prevent or lessen a lightning strike.

The last time I checked the MTS trail was only about 1/2 finished. I also remember a heck of a lot of the trail will be asphalt, as in roads. I know they are advertising it as a hike and bike trail,...
A bivy of almost any brand will be fine for a night or two, but I would still go with a high quality one-man or (what some call) a 1-1/2 man tent. You'll learn fast the bivy is claustrophobic as...
One of the biggest problems with the approach trail out of ASP is a lot of hikers get really bad blisters and end up getting off the trail or holding up in a shelter somewhere close to Springer. ...
Regardless of the manufacturer I would say that any 45 deg bag is not going to be warm enough for a complete thru. I use the NF Cats Meow 15 deg bag and find that it is just about right for all...
The key word: LAYERS
At elevations, lets say, over 2500' you better be prepared for about anything. When above tree-line this is especially true. One minute you can have calm winds, warm...
A lone hiker checks into a motel, single rate, next thing 4 or 5 more hikers are staying the night too. Next morning, new manager sees the crowd pile into the free breakfast buffet, goes to the room...
The wildest way to start a thru hike was the way "JumpStart" did. He parachuted onto the top of Springer, I can't remember the details but I remember he did have more than a few scratches due to the...
Save the money, go to the library.
Jane Goodall is alive and well, she was not killed. Dian Fossey was the one killed.
Jane Goodall was a scientist, Treadwell was suicidal nut. Goodall was killed by natives, Treadwell by the bears. Treadwell's watch was found on his detached arm, so robbery can be ruled out. I hear...
We don't need to turn this thread into a GrizzlyMan thread but I will say this. Treadwell was told by Rangers if he cared about these bears he would leave them along and obey the NPS rules for...
Will tourist seeking the trails save the area??
