A southbound hike has always been considered the "red headed stepchild", the traditional method of starting on the Approach tail and "Hiking North with Spring" will always be the Gold...

I think flip-floppers shouldn't qualify for a badge, traditional hikes only, those who start on the approach trail and finish at Katahin with no yellow blazing.

Are these "controlled burns" beneficial or harmful? Almost every time I have walked thru one afterwards I see dead turtle shells. I would think they are decimating to the native animals.

As long as the group was well behaved and left no trace I don't see a problem with it. They probably had reservations/permit in advance.

Mayo packets are notoriously hard to find, my main source is Krystal's restaurant, good gut-bombs, also, pre-hike....also like to pack Soy & Hot sauce packets.....
