  3. Bear Hunting in Georgia/North Carolina OCT 24 2019

FWIW...You can't legally hunt bears with dogs in North Georgia.
  4. Bear Canisters to be Required on Parts of the AT

I have had mice get into steel bear boxes and chew into my food bag. For the life of me, I don't see how they squeeze in.

I do carry a BV-500 most of the time now and appreciate the convenience. I...
  5. Gooch Gap to Mountain Crossing? Or Mountain Crossing to Gooch Gap?

During the week, finding a parking space at the Byron Reese parking area (at Neels Gap) is not a problem. Friday thru Sunday is near impossible in the fall.

I would also do this section...

    February start date tent question

Three season tents are fine. I hike and camp year round in GA, NC, and TN using regular Marmot, REI, and cheap Kelty tents. I've never seen anyone with a true 4 season mountaineering tent here....

    Justus Mountain re-route?

I believe the re-route was done to avoid looking at some newly constructed or soon to be constructed houses...at least that's the reason one of the folks who worked on the trail told me.
  11. Anyone use candle- powered, lights in their tents these days?

I carry a candle lantern in the winter. Really nice when staying in a shelter alone for general lighting.

Zpack Bear Bag or Bear Vault 500???

I have used a BV 500 for the past few years after getting tired of mice and squirrels raiding the bag. It is so much nicer than trying to find a suitable limb in the cold and dark. Added bonus is not...

    Woody Gap Parking...

I park there often for 1-3 days and never had a problem. The biggest problem with Woody Gap is the crowding...it fills to max on many weekends and I've been forced, more than once, to change my...

    Charlie's Bunyan Dayhike mid February

You're welcome, Tipi, but doesn't it worry you that all those folks that would have gone to Dollywood will be crowding the trails instead? ;)

Loop hike late October to mid November....

Dogwood- Starting at Neel's Gap, you would either head south on the AT to near Three Forks and turn north on the BMT heading to points north and eventually GSMNP...or one could start at Neel's, go...
  18. Section Hike Partner Wanted March 2019 NOBO

March is colder in the Georgia mountains than people expect and can be wildly unpredictable. I live between Atlanta and the AT maybe 45 minutes to the trail and even this close it can be 15-20...
  19. Woody Gap to Unicoi camping spots and water?

I am assuming you mean Unicoi Gap and not Unicoi State Park as there is not a trail link from the AT to the Park...

if so, yes there are abundant campsites all along the way. There are some dry...

You can drive most any vehicle to the trailhead on USFS 42. The road up is fine as long as you know where you are going. Plenty of parking and even a Prius can make it.

Len Foote Hike Inn or other options.

The Len Foote is likely to be booked up and is not your cheapest option. Plenty of inexpensive hotels in Dahlonega and Dawsonville.
  23. Question: side hikes and camping, NC/TN border

the hike up to the AT from Cosby campground on the Low Gap trail is one of the steeper trails in the park. You'd also want to hit Mt Cammerer towere via the side trail adding time. Add getting all...

    Headlamp
