I'm planning on starting somewhere between March 23rd and April 7th.
Thank you very much for posting this. I had been planning to Greyhound it down. Didn't even think the train was an option.
Ditto. A bag of pipe tobacco will last you a good while. Not sure of the availability on the trail but one bag of pipe tobacco would easily last me a month. Not a very big bag either. This is the...
I'm leaning towards a hammock setup for my thru. After reading several trail journals and seeing what a hassle finding decent tent sites seems to be it seemed like a logical decision. I got a 20* UQ...
I'm going to be at Springer for the Kick Off as well. Seems like a natural time to start my thru. Hope to see a lot of you there.
I plan on leaving the first week of March as well. One thing about the cold is you can always bring enough clothes with you to stay warm. The heat well thats going to be another story.
I just saved my money and bought a ENO Blaze Underquilt. I can hang my hammock in the snow and sleep fine. Works great and i'm a straight cry baby when it comes to cold.
I'll be using an Osprey Volt 60.
My family and I have a blog. I plan on making my portion of it my trail journal during my hike. We spend a lot of time just goofing off in the woods. Check it out.

I'd finish my schooling first. Collect the gear and items you need during that time. Save the money and then go after you've gotten the education to secure a chance at a decent future. The trail...
He won't be the first or the last Veteran with PTSD walking on that trail.
I feel the same way. I got an amazing hammock and the comfort is the most i've ever had camping. Yet it does weigh a pound more then a tent when you consider straps, underquilt, and tarp. I'm gonna...
One additional question. Can anyone recommend a good full coverage tarp. My ENO Profly just isn't cutting it.
Thanks guys. Thats all the help I need.
Love the idea of a hammock sock. Not sure where to buy one though.
I'm gonna show up even if I don't know a soul. Sounds like a heck of a time.
Hammock Island seems like the place for me. If i come down the morning of 16th will there still be room.
Ramps aren't for the faint of heart.
Swagadactyl.... there you go. have at it.
Basically just wanna know whos gonna be there and if anyone was there last year who can tell me a little more about it. I live about 2 hours north and am planning on going and camping.
I need a fairly lightweight underquilt for my thru hike next year. Currently I have a ENO DoubleNest as my hammock. I slept out last night and the temp got down to 40 and even in my 20* sleeping bag,...
I live about 25 mins from Luray. If you need a lift i'd be more then happy to help you out. The outfitter is alright but I'd have no problems taking you to Harrisonburg which has a really nice...
I'm with Karl on the full length UQ. Cold feet is one of the worst things hammock camping in the now. I use a full length 20* UQ with a Hot Spot from ENO, sleeping pad and a 20* sleeping bag and i'm...
