Just finished up the 75 miles from Shenandoah Rockfish Gap south to James River. Last 10 miles and especially Bluff mountain area VERY dry. Carry all the water you need up the hill.

I can get on-board with that. It's a nice section with lots of little tows that are easily reached from the trail corridor. I personally hated CT though...First try we got T-stormed out in...
Hoping this cryptic message does not mean there is NO water.
My first big sections when I started section-hiking the AT were New Jersey and New York (split over two 1-week trips). Delaware Water Gap is a good starting point. Doing these 2 states will give...
Hey! Hiking SOBO from Rockfish Gap south to either James River or beyond beginning tomorrow. It's been a damp June, I know, but I wanted to see if anyone knew what the water sources have been like...
Sounds like fun...I liked a previous posters reply suggesting the ATC allow an alternate route on the BMT. Sucks that I have been married to the idea of getting the trail Section hiked, but I gotta...
The 4th is a Wednesday this year. Will that week be a bad week to Section GSMNP? Or, will the mid-week holiday keep the numbers down? I know this can only be a guess, but maybe some locals out...
I tried to close this thread since I chose the wrong topic, but I can't find the little checkbox. Thanks for the linking...
Ugh....that sounds like a fun night, but poor for sleeping. Thanks for the input, though.
Thanks to all...sounds like we better play it safe and carry the tents.... I'm less enthused to do this Section than I probably should be. I don't really like staying in shelters in general. Rainy...
We sectioned Mass and Vermont to Killington in consecutive years. The access road closest to the actual border is a rugged forest road. A local shuttles was able to get us back there in August to...

Smokies...have some questions though...posting a new thread.
@oopsdy - Thanks for the heads up. Hoping the temps stay where they were at this weekend, but I'm hearing a new heat wave may be due. More rain expected, though and that is good for the water...
Thanks for this...VERY helpful. Thanks to all the other posts as well.
We are looking to thru NJ in July. A few questions:
1) How are the springs in a typical NJ summer? Reliable?
2) We heard that the NJ section would provide lots of opportunity for food stops,...
For a Noob to end their first trip by hiking 5 miles on the C&O is brutal. I suggest that you start at Harpers and use the towpath to build some momentum to the climb up South....easy walking from...
