Thanks for the updates!
If you can't reach people I understand the cell towers are overloaded (and spotty for certain carriers to begin with). They are suggesting texting rather than calling for now.
I'm so sorry to hear of this. Every time I have stopped in the ATC John was in there. Babu originally introduced him to me, and he was there when I came in for my picture on my 2008 thru-hike. John...
We may see each other. We leave on the 11th and figure I'll end around the 28th - 30th.
Consider dumping the pack cover (that will only minimally work in steady rain anyway) and go with a trash COMPACTOR bag inside. It will protect your gear better and it is pricier than a regular...
What is the best resource for snowpack info (sorry if already posted and I missed it!)?
I'm sure I'll see you 1Greywolf. I start the day before.
Permit Confirmed! I have confirmation on 2 JMT permits and 2 Half Dome permits...starting on July 11! Does anyone know if I can do Half Dome on my second day? Essentially, is my Half Dome permit...
Evenflow, did you get your confirmation by e-mail? Did you fax your permit request in the day you could or 5 pm PT the day before - I understand that either is ok? Any quirks I need to be thinking...
Thanks. That was the format I was aware of. I appreciate the confirmation.
I plan to start within a day or two of you. Is there a new permit process that I'm not aware of? I didn't think you could send your permit for that date yet?
We will all miss Serene. He was such a lovely man. Everyone has a nice story to tell about him, and I don't think anyone could come up with anything negative to say if they tried. He was that kind...
I'm looking for shuttle help so I can hike back to my car on the Highline Trail (near Vernal, UT) around July 10/11. Will gladly pay gas and put a few bucks in someones pocket, or take all...
Above would be my recommendation too, give or take. Bears Den to Harper's Ferry would be nice, and an interesting endpoint, about 20 mi total. Or the opposite way.
Also consider hiking SOBO...
For tick prevention - stick to wearing pants or wear gaiters. 100% Deet around ankles and on hat at least. Check yourself religiously at night. Keep hair cut shorter? Have a plan to get to...
Not so much a secret but something many regretfully pass by - take the blueblaze to Dismal Creek Falls in VA and spend the afternoon and night there - go to the general store at the road before and...
Things you can lose:
Tyvek
Compass (replace with guidebook pages - you can always have a compass sent back to you NH north if you're not confident)
trowel (use boot/trekking poles)
camp towel...
Uhhh, mis-typed Highline Trail...
Anyone with tips/suggestions for hiking the Highland Trail in Utah in July with a dog? Looking for specific information on shuttles, hostels/cheap stay, and if there is any chance at re-supply...
If you plan to do it, I live pretty close to Middleburgh/West Fulton and could get you to resupply/food/shower if I'm around when you are hiking. PM me well in advance (I'm not on here a ton) if you...
Last time I was at that pavillion you were there!
Oh dear Wak! I'm sticking to more traditional ways of ingesting booze. Hope you guys are well! Come on, don't you have any winter tips for me; even you guys are getting snow!
Just a thought back to you if you haven't tried it - consider a trash compactor bag. They keep things dry and are very durable, much more so than the typical trashbag. :)
Thanks for the tips and the links, everyone. Keep suggestions coming!
All you ADK folks, feel free to PM me; I'm new to the area and I'm always looking for hiking partners/trip ideas! I know...
