No doubt a hostel or resupply point along the trail near the James River Footbridge would be very useful for hikers and potentially a viable economic venture, however, take a good look at the VDOT...
Condolences to Maria and family. In 2012 the hostel and Curtis were a godsend. Semper Fi…. fair winds and following seas Brother.

Rumor has it that all the beautiful farmland in central PA is there because they moved all the rocks to the mountain ridge lines…..then, since it was no good for anything else, the decision was made...
I found the best cell service was Verizon…even in towns. If no Verizon, no cell service. That said, texting is always more reliable than trying to make a call. It uses less power and short burst...
I retired out of MacDill AFB nearly 18 years ago. Am starting Flip at the NY/CT border hiking north to VT then off during May to give the Black Flies a vacation… then on to Katahdin….then south from...
You're welcome. Any other questions feel free to contact me.
The maps are very useful, however, the guidebook recommendation is another excellent way to know about shelters and resupply. Are you planning NOBO or SOBO…starting when?
Standard ATC maps show trail, contours, profile, shelters, water sources and towns if close enough.
Hanging your food at the shelter opening will reduce mouse access, but still will not protect you from a bear…especially a habituated bear.
Southern PA is a benign hike and should be greening well at your time frame..northern PA is just too rocky for beginners to do a week of sectioning. SNP is still my recommendation, but is crowded at...
Do not sleep with your food unless the Bears are deep in hibernation. Use a waterproof bag to carry your food and hang the bag with a length of paracord and a carabiner. Lob the cord over a tree...
I agree that hiking the Shenandoah National Park meets your requirements better than any other section. Reasonable access to airports, well graded trail with access to plenty of water. Additionally,...
The old road is (est. 50 yards) left of the trail looking North from the parking area. There is a gate to block vehicular traffic. The road is an easy hike and the actual trail crosses the road a...
I am looking for input/recommendations on order of layering. I have many poly layers and a few wool layers. Is it better to place the wool next to the skin and layer poly over?
i love how you are thinking!!! I've had the same thoughts, but for now I'm working on finishing the AT. my current plan is to finish CT and MA before Black Fly season and then go from VT through ME...
Planning to hike through VT, NH, and ME starting in June. I would love use the Hut system, but not sure of dates or what kind of mileage I will be doing…how do you make reservations with this kind of...
Hi Speedbump,
From NC, but have hiked all the way from Springer to CT. Everyone is soooo negative about hiking in New England in spring/April-May. I understand the Black fly issue and mud/trail...
Thank you, but since I stopped in VA quite a while ago I have hiked north well into CT already.
Thank you for your response, I can hike fast on flat land… lol. I am retired from medicine. I started 2 years ago with the intent of thru hiking, but went back to work after getting into VA. Since...
I am planning to start in early to mid April 2015 and will try to finish NOBO. I average 12-15 miles a day and will stay in hotels or other accommodations every 3rd or 4th as long as not too far from...
