We're in Dayton too! Small world.
You can add us, Ricky. Mirage, Romeo, and Squirrel.
My dalmatian love to chase squirrels, so whenever she's going to be sleeping in the tent (which is virtually ALL netting other than the floor) we just pitch it with the fly on and zip it up at night....
If your friend doesn't want to invest a huge amount of money in the gear right off the bat, she may be able to find places to rent a lot of it. My brother works for an outdoor rec center at a local...
Keen and Vibram both make some great footwear. Both for very different uses as far as I'm concerned...
I've owned a pair of Keen Targhees, and done several hikes in them. They're a GREAT boot...
I use an MSR Miniworks, but I guess if you had a different type of filter, or even and in-line filter, that disadvantage wouldn't be a disadvantage at all.
On the same token, when I'm in a rhythm and thirsty I don't want to have to stop to get a drink of water... I guess this would be different for someone who is coordinated enough to juggle two sticks...
+1 for that idea... their hiker hostel is great, and the breakfast can't be beat (it's a little extra, but more than worth it).
Maybe we'll see you out there, too! We're doing a day and a half...
Nyte, this is very well said. If this is the unpopular opinion, call me a contrarian.
The mantra on this site HYOH seems applicable here... LYOL - Live your own life! :sun
The first time we took our dalmatians out for a hike with their backpacks about half the people we came across said something to the tune of "How many beers you have him carrying?" or "I bet he could...
Less weight sounds like a good plan - we may have to look into that, as I'm sure WE will be doing much of the food carrying for her. ;)
(Although she'll probably sill get some peanut butter as a...
We're taking her to the vet this weekend for her yearly check up, and were intending to ask some questions about nutrition. I'll definitely follow up especially on the question regarding waterborne...
I rather hope it IS a project for school. As a graduate student myself, I'd like to think I helped a peer out with a research project! ;)
Even if it was just for fun, I would be interested in the...
I should clarify, 4 cups of dry kibble PER DAY. not total.
In mid-June, my 51 lb dalmatian will be making her AT debut for a 5-day section in the Grayson Highlands area. We haven't exactly worked out the mileage yet, but my guess is we will be doing 8-10...
Thanks, SunnyWalker! I'm hoping they're as good at hiking the AT as they are at eliciting those nice compliments.
In case anyone's still looking for Nora, she went on vacation... and made a "splash" in the news!

I'm not nearly as seasoned as most posting here, but I can tell you that I was pretty miserable when I didn't think to take along medications for seasonal allergies... Moleskin has saved my heels on...
My dad put a 20lb weight in the bottom of my brother's pack the first time he took him backpacking. My brother beat everyone up the mountains that day and earned the trail name "20 Pounds" because...
An orange trowel
Poison ivy everywhere
Thankfully not allergic!
In most areas of the US you're going to get better service with AT&T than with T-Mobile. That being said, I've taken my AT&T iPhone on the trail and in various backcountry situations, and without...
+1... I wished someone would have told me this before I went on the AT the first time! (and mine wasn't even a thru)
Peanut butter and GORP burritos are one of my brother's staples... except he adds summer sausage and cheese. ick!
Santa must have put us on the "really nice" list this year... I got a Gregory Baltoro 65 to replace the awful, ill-fitting hand-me-down pack I had, and a fleece lined stuff sack I'll use as a pillow....
Loving this thread! Here are Rugby and Lady, our hiking Dalmatians. My boyfriend is next to our Dal, Lady (Aka "Squirrel!"),and my parents Dal, Rugby (Aka "Beer Wagon") is in the foreground. This...
