Can anyone give me an update of trail conditions between 19E and Watauga Dam (321)? We're not planning on staying at the shelters....What are the "designated" camping areas like?
Thanks..

Can anyone give me a water report for the section between Greasy Creek and 19E?
Thanks....
Glad to know I am not the only one who found that area confusing. I hiked in Uwharrie about 5 or 6 years ago, and suffered the same fate. The blazes and trail just faded away. I need to pick up...
I completely agree......
22. Also, less injuries.
Dufus....my son and I shared a shuttle with you into Fontana Village...great to hear you found your poles! It was a disturbing to hear of all the "theft" that was taking place on the trail so far...
Heading out for a section - NOC through the Smokys - 3/27! I hope some of the snow melts by then!
We stayed at CC's a few weeks ago. Around 6:00 pm crazy neighbor cranked up his "stereo shack" and his lawnmower. He left the stereo blaring all night...on NPR. Listened to the Greatful Dead hour,...
We sectioned from NOC to Fontana and I remember it as one of the toughest climbs yet. That section to me was a killer. It was also my first on the AT - we did it in February in the sleet. One hell...
I dehydrated on the approach trail one hot July day a few years ago and swear I will never do that again. My signs were bright yellow pee, and I had stopped sweating - I knew I was in trouble. We...
Thanks guys. Sounds like things are good. I can hardly wait to hit the trail!
Thanks.
We'll be up there this weekend. Hope the water situation holds true.
Maybe we'll run into you again. Hiking Saturday to Monday.
We've had lots of rain in the Raleigh area in the past few weeks and months, but I don't know if the same can be said for the Mountains. We are planning a section hike in couple of weeks from Devil...
We are doing this section in a few weeks also and have the same idea. We wished we would have camped on top of Max Patch last year and didn't, so hopefuly the weather will cooperate!
Jayboflavin...
The jetboil is great for boiling water fast for freezed dried packaged food, breakfast, and coffee. Since it is the only peice of cooking equipment we carry, we plan our meals accordingly and eat...
Speaking as a section hiker, I believe it would be used at times other than thu hiker season.
Have you ever seen busch light in a camoflauged can? It's for hunters that don't want the deer to know they're drunk...it might give the deer more reaction time!:)
Wild Turkey 101 - on the trail - nothing better to sooth sore muscles
Anything cold - in town
Killians Irish Red - at home
How long are these two hikes? I am looking for a 20 - 25 mile loop for this weekend with some nice views (if it isn't raining). I would look at my map but I forgot to bring it to work with me today! ...
I use a Noahs Tarp from REI...it has kept us dry through many severe storms in the Southern Appalachians and have't had any problems with bugs even in the middle of the summer. Easy to set up and...
We hiked Devil Fork Gap to Hot Springs about 4 weeks ago. We filled up at Flint Mt Shelter and didn't see water again until Spring Mt Shelter. The spring at Spring Mt Shelter was slow 4 weeks...
PS--The mouse issue pretty much goes away when the weather gets cold, too. Mice are not fools--they stay holed up in the warm little nests they've made with the pack towels and bandannas of earlier...
1. Mice
2. Mice in the morning.
3. Mice at night.
4. Mice on the floor.
5. Mice on the roof.
...and you can guess what the bottom 5 are, right? MICE!!! At least other hikers don't keep you...
We just got off this section Sunday. Water is very scarce. Flint Mountain Shelter was flowing freely - fill up big there. Jerry Cabin Shelter is dry and was the temporary home of a hunting dog. About...
I remember.... As you can tell, we didn't make. It was a wise, but hard choice for us to call the hike, but I lived to hike another day on TWO legs. We told you about the trashed gap we had just...
Dreaming about the next trip, attending music festivals (if time and $ allow), working out, dreaming about my thru-hike in 2014 and for the next several weeks- planning my wedding! :)
