You should not be setting up any sort of tent in the shelters, the mice and mosquitoes are part of the shelter experience. You could look into using a bivy bag/sack which does not take up more space...

This is very true about shelters close to trailheads, I was not considering that in my post. However I would never use a shelter that near to a trail head for the exact reasons you listed.

it takes less space then a tent ;) but in all seriousness I doubt that people start taking these on back country hikes if they get fully developed and functioning as it appears to have many breakable...
