If that is the exit near Atkins, check with Long Neck Lair, the alpaca farm. You can park there, it's about .25 from the exit, and they will shuttle you.
Any good tent sites between Walker Gap and Va 623? Expect to hike farther than the shelter and the gap, but not as far as Davis Farm.
Thanks
Don't try to cook in a jetboil or jetboil-like apparatus. Just means you'll be hiking with a dirty jetboil. Boil water for steamer bag cooking.
The patch of grass between where the blue blaze comes out of the woods and the barn is one of the best tenting spots on the whole AT. Incredible view across the valley and a gajillion stars at night.
Anyone know how good is this road from Va 663 to the trail crossing at Big Horse Gap? On the map it appears to be a road up to a cell or radio tower, wondering how good a road it is.
There have been camping bans in that stretch between 421 and Damascus at times the last 2-3 years, as a result we did 421 to Damascus as a day hike, very doable, and then did 421 to Wilbur Dam Road...
Wait. Section hiking the 100 mile wilderness is a thing? Are there enough access points for in and out?
M to S Trail is near Asheville, but not the AT. But the Standing Indian loop near Franklin is great.
Going to finish the Smokies, finally. Mt. Buckley to Fontana Dam. Then back to SW Va. to keep pushing northward.
My wife and I did this section today, Dec. 29, hiking south from Va. 625/FS 222. We got to the north bank of the creek at 9:00 am, air temp. 24 F. The temporary rope line is a little upstream from...
Headed that way next week, trying to figure out best method for cold weather creek crossing. Thinking crocs. Stay tuned.
Looks like the bridge at the Lick Creek crossing is still out. AT says it's usually knee deep but no indication how wide. What is that crossing like?
"I did have to stow my hiking poles as it was too steep for there use and I had to use my hands to help brace myself. I may have had to use my hands to help pull/push myself up in a couple places. It...
It's steep - up if northbound, down if south. I guess it's considered one of the steepest sections of the trail, but it's not long, about 1/3 of a mile. A couple hand over hand spots, as I recall,...
In summer 2021 we planned to do Watauga Lake to Damascus, but the Double Springs Shelter-Backbone Rock Trail junction closure forced us to change our plans. We did Low Gap to the lake in one hike,...
Not sure why, but it's up for auction
Standing Indian Campground, you can camp there and there are various blue blazes to the AT from the campground, or you can get right on the AT at Rock Gap, just up the road from the campground.
To clarify: for AFSP, the Marta option is the end of the red line (North Springs), and then shuttle or lyft/uber to AFSP
"Easiest" is to rent a car and drive. Alternative is to find shuttle driver who picks up at airport and shuttle to AFSP (there are a few on the shuttle driver list for Ga.). Another alternative is...
I am in the process of making plans for Clingmans Dome-Fontana hike and spoke to someone about paid parking and shuttle instead of parking at the VC, and was told that TVA has installed cameras and...
We did Wilbur Dam Road to Damascus in two section hikes last summer, our plans to do it in 3 days were disrupted by camping closures between Double Spring and Backbone Rock last year, not sure if...
A small point, or maybe more of a question: the Legends Tracking thing that is linked to this post has total mileage at approx. 2125. 2022 WB mileage is 2194, or approx. 70 miles more than shown on...
Standing Indian Loop. Start at Standing Indian Campground, hike Kimsey Creek trail to meet the AT at Deep Gap, then hike AT northbound to Long Branch Trail or Rock Gap, either one gets you back to...
Seatbelt, curious on your take that NFG-Fontana is harder than NFG-Davenport. More miles? Or something more than that? Thanks
