Judging from the odd comments, I have to think Tilley's "heavy" old style hats must hold up better in the wind. Whereas the lighter weight hats do not.
One other point I should make, you must...
The hat's brim doesn't flap around, or you don't care that it does flap around?
I own a Tilley (LT6), but would never wear it hiking for one reason. Wind. While I can tie-down the hat to my head, the brim is too soft and will flip up with any sort of "real" wind. Thereby...
This is true. That reminds me, the weather forecasts for any place nearby Dolly Sods do not apply to Dolly Sods. It can be warm and sunny in the valley, but DS is 3-4K higher (especially DSN) which...
Elkins isn't touristy. It is a small mountain town that just slows you down on the way to your real destination (Skiing [north or south of town], Dolly Sods, etc.). You'll curse every traffic light...
Can't help you with a hotel, there plenty in Elkins (Snowshoe Ski Resort is just down the street), but I will tell you the best way to get there from Columbus is...33-->50-->79-->33-->Elkins-->32.
If you haven't found them already, the best DS maps are found here.

I've often wondered why it doesn't offer that as well. It doesn't need to store way-points, or have an arrow telling me where to go. Or support geocaching, just tell me where I am now using UTM...

First there are two categories of bivies. Some are heavier standalone shelters that are waterproof. They typically weigh about 2# and are indented to be used primarily was...
Your ability to tolerate NE "winters" and an occasional cold snap and/or storm in the south are the limiting factors. I assume the former are far more "difficult" than the later.
Well, if we...
Maybe it is easier to lie now? In the past I had to request a form (via snailmail) and then mail it back, along with some sort of "proof"? Now I just fill out a web form? The former provides lots...
Obviously, no.
As a side note, I am constantly amazed at the number of folks that I meet in the back country that do very little research. Anywhere. Maybe its my personality, but I like to, at...
I don't think he was after any sort of speed record. Even his own blog states he slowed down quite a bit at the end...
I don't care so much about weight on day hikes. In fact, they tend to be "heavy" and "over stocked". Unless you plan on doing a 20-30 mile day hike, I wouldn't worry about it.
I use to "hope it would go away", but recently, I've embraced the midnight run. Even in the cold. So, now I wake-up and "get it over with" at the first signs of having to go rather than hold off.

Here's one of those old posts.
I forgot about the "crumple" effect at the bottom. That was not comfortable at all.
I didn't write a formal review of the Katahdin, but I'm sure I made a longer post on the subject (several years ago). In short, the shoulder straps and hip belt are nice. The pack's volume and...
PowerMax canisters actually have more propane in them than other canisters. And it is the propane that "boils" at such a low temperature.
As mentioned above, I suspect the reason the cans are...
I think this has been mentioned before by others in one form or another....
Part of why seems a bit borning now (and maybe why the "Dark Days" started) is there isn't a whole lot to talk about WRT...
For the most part, there didn't need to be mods because everyone was civil (except Easy's drukin' rants, but those were removed before many even saw them.....sounds like a mod...:-?), now most...
Back on-topic, RJ finished his NoBo thru-hike a couple days ago.
