I didn't have any trouble getting a ride to Lake City on my thru... I waited a couple of minutes at the parking lot and saw a couple headed to their car, I asked if they were going to Lake City and...
Between the lakes? - I don't think so. However, west of the pair of lakes there's a bridge across Lake Creek at the Willis Gulch trailhead. There is a trail that connects that trailhead to 01_042...
Resupply towns: Lake City & Breckenridge are my favorites. Silverton, Copper Mtn, Mt. Princeton Hot Springs and Salida are good (depending on your resupply needs), and are my next-favorites...
Shorts vs. pants: that's a personal choice, I guess. My schedule was similar to yours; I don't think there were many days that were 80 degrees or more, but there were plenty of times I was hot. For...
I'm with colorado_rob - I would do two weeks ending in Durango. I liked all the CT, but the San Juans were the highlight.
Most of the advice above is good.
If you'd like some reading material, here's one of the most informative articles I've read on lightning in the backcountry:...
I think you'd be OK without bug netting. I did my thru in July, and only had bug issues one night... August should be even more bug-free, at least for mosquitoes.
Many people say to upsize, starting with Jardine... I didn't find this to be necessary or desirable for me. I guess my feet don't swell that much...
Trail runners work well for me. Years ago I thought only boots would work as my ankles seemed weak - turns out the opposite was true. In shoes I find I adapt readily to the surface, vs. stomping...
Looks like a good kit, and light weight!
Do you take sunscreen, knit hat, gloves, maps, or compass?
You could get by with a smaller knife and save 5 ounces... but overall, it looks good.
I used Potable Aqua Plus on my thru - no pump needed.
One time I came to a small seep that I couldn't have dipped from, and was uncertain how much further to reliable water; I was contemplating...
I really like maps for the CT hike. They give an overview of where you are, and what's ahead (elevation, climb/descend, exposure, features, water, camping possibilities, etc).
The CT Mapbook is...
I would recommend the 20 degree bag, even though it weighs more. It's not uncommon to have frosty nights in July and even August. I got by fine with a 32 degree bag on my thru, however most people...
It's good to hit the high passes and ridges in the morning when you can... but realistically, on a thru-hike, some will come up later in the day. That doesn't necessarily mean that you have a bad...
OK! - that's great. Thanks Bear Creek, High Sierra Attitude, and Guthooks Hikes!
Sounds really neat!
I'm a little confused by the Google Play description, though: I see that a free demo is available that includes Segment 1, but I don't see a download for the full trail. Is...
SWBO thru '07
Section travels: 2 multi-day trips SWBO, 2 NEBO
Lake City is a great town for a re-supply and a little down-time... great news that they will have a shuttle service!
I used Potable Aqua tablets on my thru - this worked well for me. In a few cases my water source was a mere trickle - but always clear.
I agree with others: more lakes on the JMT, more wildflowers and variety on the CT. They were similar for me in terms of miles and vertical feet gained per day...
One additional thing I'll note:...
I took a zero in Lake City - I really enjoyed the town. I haven't spent as much time in Creede, but I doubt it could top Lake City!
I say leave them at home - I've done fine with a single pair of trail shoes.
Dr Professor: I've never really thought of my NeoAir as being noisy - nothing bothersome. I also am a side-sleeper, and I really like the comfort.
I have been quite happy with my Therm-A-Rest NeoAir pad. I like the light weight and the ~2+ inches of thickness for the comfort. Some have reported problems with leaks, but I haven't personally...
Compass and maps?
Looks like a good list with some nice (and light) equipment!
