Doing 100 miles in one day on the AT would be very difficult, and would need a ton of training. I did the Leadville 100 running race last summer, and needed pacers and support and only made it 97...
so I guess this goes to prove that deep fried noodles and MSG are good for you after all.

We have one of the greats....What would we do without him?
Thanks for the update Nean. I will have to tune in next spring for the epic journey.
I was reminded of Squeaky the other day while talking to a friend who bumped into him on the CDT. I've been away from whiteblaze for many months and haven't heard any Squeaky news. Did he do his 40...
Go to sprawl-mart and head to the the cooking section. Buy the cheapest 1.5 quart pot you can find and cut the handle off. Then make a lid from the bottom of a pie pan. It has done me well.
I would check out the Mountain Hardware Waypoint One. It is roomy and fairly light, and seems to always be on sale.
I'm sort of out of the loop...Where is old MS now?
MN-Smith keep on trucking! I hear that you might get a free lunch in Damascus from your pal Lone Wolf. That right there would keep me going.
You might want to check out the San Juans or the Sangre de Cristos, less crowds and just amazing. Summit, Lake, and Pitkin Counties are just a little too crowded for my taste.
Mags, You should have skied the Elk Mountain Grand Traverse this weekend. It put my hardest day on any trail to shame. It started at Midnight in Crested Butte, 40+ miles long, skinned over 3,...
I would say if MinnesotaSmith makes it, he'll go from the hall of shame, to the hall of fame. Go MS!!!
I wouldn't count on not walking in snow again. I got hit April 1st in 2004, and April 22nd in 2005.
Thanks Skidsteer for throwing that link in there, I really wanted to see a nice action shot of our buddy MS. The caption was entertaining. I thought you guys were kidding about him carrying all...
Here is what I would take:
Long Underware Top and Bottom (no cotton)
Light weight Rain Gear, Top and Bottom (precip, redlodge, sierra des.)
Running Shorts
Running Shirt (very breathable)
A...
I would say during the first part of your hike, figure on 2 pounds per day. Later in your hike you can get the weight down. In my opinion if your ever carrying over 4.5 days of food on the AT, your...
So has MS made it into the smokies?
Looks good, after about ten days or so I would take everything out of your pack and make three piles. 1st pile, stuff I used today, 2nd stuff I used in the last 3 days, 3rd pile, stuff I haven't...
So when is your start date? I just might have to get in on this.
I would contend that down south, the whites, and southern maine the average mph is 2.25. I would say 3 mph would be average for the rest of it.
I've been in Moab in the snow, its not that fun. I would go more south.
I always carried on average about $50 or so. Make sure in Maine to carry a couple hundred.
Count me in, I was looking to do another long distance hike. So we should each throw in a few hundred and then the most points gets the purse on the Big K.
Go with a 3/4 ridge rest if your using it on a thru hike. Nothing can fail, it insulates well, its cheap, and its light.
