Dam,n Lyle, both those experiences sound amazing. Logistical question about hikanation: did you just walk on roads? How did that many people manage to do that safely? And where did you all sleep at...

How long have you spent outside?

As I get older, speed and high mileage don't excite me. I'm inspired and interested by people who have spent long periods of time hiking or living outdoors, just as I'm inspired by those who have...

I agree with RED-DOG and colorado_rob about simplicity. Finding a Coke or a candy bar is amazing. Truly magical. Coming across a large barbecue picnic is for me overwhelming and causes some anxiety....

I'm too cynical to fall for that long distance dedication story. He hiked 60 miles to show how tough he is and used his grandparents to brag about how tough he is while making people think he's not...

I think it's funny to hike 60 miles to honor someone's anniversary. If he's keeping a journal, surely he could have gone online and bought something. I mean what are those miles going to do for his...

I really wanted to like Walk Across America but couldn't get into it. I prefer Fletcher's British wit to Jenkins' earnestness.

You're able to talk specifics about something happening in 2020? I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing later today but not 100%.

Anyone have any experience with these?

  14. Praise for "The Complete Walker", original version.

I was in a used book store and found a copy, written by Colin Fletcher in 1968. He's updated it several times since, but I recommend reading the original if you can. Why? For the same reason we read...

Never tried Ribz, but I do attempt to redistribute weight. I wear a hip pack (fanny pack) in front. In it I carry everything I want to access quickly - gloves, phone, knife, water tablets, etc. I...

In NJ/NY/CT I've experienced lots of gnats, but they don't seem to bite. They just hover and dive-bomb my eyes and ears. Very annoying. No mosquitos yet.

One day I found a couple big ticks, but no...

Thanks for the reply. I'm from the east so I'm not as comfortable with deserts. NPR made it sound pretty dire.

I didn't get a trail name from the guy I met. Still not sure if it's him. He was alone at the time, although he mentioned his brother in law, who I assume he had been hiking with...

Just heard a report on the CA drought and they're saying it's only getting worse. How's the trail? Can anyone share some experience firsthand, especially those who have hiked in years past and can...

    Rusty's?

Haven't hiked in 18 years. How is Rusty (Hard Time Hollow in VA)? I did a search and found some rumors from a few years ago that he was having health issues and/or retiring. How is he?
