I had a cheeseburger, onion rings and milkshake at three waysides going thru SNP. A great supplement to my food bag.
Sure enough, if you stop to go to the bathroom, another hiker will come along.
Given a choice, go to the upslope side of the trail. Hikers tend to look to the downslope side to avoid going over...
This was at the Silver Hill Campsite on 5Jul18. Absolutely calm day. We were eating in the pavilion when this branch just broke and fell out of the tree. Just missed the tent. Guy left his tent...
Good to hear from you again.
Hike on, happy trails.
+1. Not stylish but works. Hand warmers when it’s really cold
I was at a shelter where the discussion was about rolling your bandana. After you fold it into a triangle do you fold or roll it with the point in or out. My vote was in, it’s neater.
46882I met this guy somewhere in VA. Like Tipi we spoke a few words, I put my Stick to the left for him to look at and I went around the right. Don’t wear headphones, they don’t always rattle loud.
I agree with the above. I’ve washed mine in my agitatorless top loader with no problems. Multiple passes in the dryer with tennis balls, checking off clumps.
I use my poncho liners down to about 50*, below that my 23* down bag. I’m no longer part of the “travel light and freeze at night” crowd. RLTW
I put my boots in a plastic bag inside at the foot of my tent. If you leave them outside the gremlins might get them.
I’m an “everything inside the tent” guy.

To be complete, this poll needs an unconditional yes option.
My prehike standards were:
Not treat if I saw it coming out of the ground as a natural spring
Filter if it was a small stream or a piped source
Filter and treat (aquamira) it if it was a larger...
My S2S pillow greatly improved my sleep
I use a plastic pint Jim Beam bottle for ( appropriately ) my alcohol fuel. The flat shape fits my pack side pocket well.
I’ve walked on both ends. Now all I have to do is everything in between.
I’ve carried the same Camillus demo knife for 47 years now. I think that it’s had the same dummy cord for the whole time. The belt sheaf is frayed and repaired several times. It’s cut everything -...
All good advice above.
I didn't know a lot about thru hiking the AT when I started thinking about it in 2013. I needed a plan just to have some idea of the where/when of hiking the trail. I also...

I did 2 miles to train and pump up the local economy.
I have been doing about 5 mpd walks.
+1 on Marc “Strings” Cusic. He helped me get back to HF when I injured my knee in 2018.
It was probably a blank 7.62 round, either loose from a belt for an M-60 machine gun or ( unlikely ) from an M-14 rifle magazine. No bullet but a paper disk sealing the end. Both weapons are...

I visited Camp Merrill before I started the trail in 2018.

I don’t usually do real cold ( towards 0* ) but I was warm at 17* with my Thermorest, Zlite, reflectix and 23* bag. Just had on UA base layer and balaclava, and socks. I didn’t have my puffy on but...
I was in the Mountain Phase of Ranger School in 1976. We reconned Hawk Mountain shelter one night, I was somewhere out on security.
We might have observed the trail if a patrol got near it. We...
Any update on the shelter? Have/will they tear it down?
I’m glad that I stayed there in 2018.
