Thanks for all the great responses. I have been looking into SLO's suggestion of Davenport to Hot Springs. Just save the Smokies when I finally have the ability to attempt a thru.

Going on a vacation with family at the end of September to Gatlinberg. I want to do about 30 miles of hiking while there however, I like sleeping under my tarp and don't want to deal with the Smokies...
