Also just because you are hiking in an area that doesn't allow hunting, don't be fooled into thinking that no one is hunting there. There's bad apples in every bunch unfortunately.

How much weight are you expecting your raingear to occupy? Poncho tarps are a viable option if you are trying to lighten up. Driducks are also a great lightweight option, if you rip a hole in them...
i'd suggest seeing a different part of the country than you are used to. try the PCT you won't regret it.
I also would say Southern California. You can somewhat take your time and there are plenty of vistas to be had.
