I agree, a well behaved dog is a lot of fun to encounter on the trail. A dog jumping at my dinner bowl, or trying to bite my son, is another thing.
In Virginia I've lived in a lot of different localities. No correlation between tax rate and services rendered. I never can figure out what some counties do with their money.
I would definitely expect a cheap cost of living and taxes in SW Virginia
Yeah, I was shocked how much people made fun of me when I first came on here and asked honest questions. It never bothered me too much, but I could see a lot of people deciding white blaze and maybe...
Glad somebody else said it! Look at the elevations of the two planned endpoints. Start at the higher one!
I don't have much preference. I just start and stop at points that logistically seem to work out best. I like stopping near a town so I'm close to food.
We just use the names for fun...it was fun to do with little kids. Their older now, but we've stuck with the names.
Heard any of these before...my family has been section hiking with these names:
Tenderfoot - My wife went out after foot surgery
Web Sweeper - My daughter is up early has to lead the way...
haircuts....not a big issue for most thru hikers...but if you happen to get one, tip.
She can fly to Charlottesville, VA. It's not far to the Southern entrance of Shenandoah National Park from there. Heck I'd even give her a ride if she came in when I was off from work.

I hate this. Here's hoping she was having a great...
I really don't think the original idea is that bad. There's all sorts of little ways they could indicated direction. Even if they only did it once every ten blazes. Put a dot above the blaze for...
Man, that's one giant chip on your shoulder!
Why don't you ask some of the scholars who have studied and written books on apologetics, or better yet read one of their books? Because you don't want answers. You want a fight.
You're the first person I ever saw use the word "nonplussed" correctly.
I always wanted to be a head football coach at a high school. I was good assistant and j.v. coach (46 wins, 4 losses over 5 seasons). I was applying for jobs and felt I would soon have one, when my...
If it's a pagan goat, then those are some of the least scary pagans I've ever met, not to mention unartistic.
I think if you add in I don't have to worry about political and crime factors of the area (like being arrested as a spy or being robbed on my ride from airport to trail head), that changes things a...
Anybody know why there's a goat painted in that little cave in Harper's Ferry? A goat seems like a strange thing to paint, and it doesn't seem like an occult style painting.
I coach cross country and track and field and the thinking now is that stretching before any athletic activity (I'm talking about static stretching where you push and pull on muscles) actually causes...
I live in a fairly small town with only one convenience store. The other night I was going to stop in and grab a couple of things, but they had so many people hanging out in the parking lot, I didn't...
I live two hours from DC. If we go up for the day we usually figure we're only going to see ONE Smithsonian museum. Still, you can see what you need to of the monuments in a day IMO.
Thanks for the advice everyone. We tried Lovettsville but it was at capacity. So we ended up doing a tubing trip. With 100+ heat indexes and Highacre not being air-conditioned it was a nice trip.
Feedbag Blazer - Hit every hiker feed on trail.
